My 19-month-old lab has welps between his toes on his paws. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be?

Asked by Jane_Ann_Deaux (586points) November 29th, 2008

I’m planning on taking him to the doctor first thing on Monday morning, but if it’s something serious, I want to take him to the animal hospital tonight.

The welps almost look like insect bites, but he has multiple bites on each of his paws. I don’t think they’re insect bites because of the placement and number of them.

Might it be a good allergy?

Can you call the emergency animal hospital and ask them tonight?

They said they wouldn’t answer any questions without having looked at the dog. Some sort of lawsuit thing, where if they give wrong information without having seen the symptoms… yatta, yatta.

Do you mean “welts”? Whelps are puppies and whelping refers to a dog giving birth.

Do you use something on the dog to repel ticks and fleas?

There is a slim chance it could be poison ivy, sumac or oak. Is the dog scratching?

We do use a tick and flea repellent, but I’m not sure which one. He’s not scratching it, just licking it like crazy.

It could be poison ivy or the like, but I’m surprised it hasn’t spread yet it that’s what it is.

teehee dragons in his toes! (whelps sometimes refer to baby dragons too)
No clue what it is but I hope it’s nothing serious. :) Good luck!

It sounds like a contact dermatitis, bacterial infection, or an allergy of some sort (dogs express their allergies through their skin, unlike our own runny noses and itchy eyes). You’ll most likely be fine to wait until Monday, just keep an eye on him and watch for generalized welts, facial swelling, and swelling around the eyes. If it is an allergy and progresses to that degree, you’ll want to get him some relief sooner.

Because I know everyone was anxiously an update, I will inform you of the vets assessment.

After thinking it was multiple foreign objects lodged in between his toes, he decided to bring Jack (my dog) back in, put him under, and slice each of the sores open. He said the sores needed to heal from the inside out.

Now my poor puppy is stuck with sore feet and a cone around his head for the next 10 days. He’s just so pitiful, it breaks my heart. The vet now thinks it was a fungal infection, but well know in a couple of days after he tests the skin sample.

Thanks for everyone’s help!
