Any advice for staying on task during finals period?

Asked by answerjill (6198points) December 7th, 2008

I am a graduate student who needs to sit down and write a couple of papers and grade a bunch of assignments over the course of the next 2 weeks. Any tricks that you have developed to avoid distractions and focus on the work at hand? (Avoiding Fluther may be a good start…..)

make a playlist with your favorite music, wear your best, most comfortable earphones and go to a coffee shop and do work. do not use the internet. take a break once in a while. get up and go to the bathroom, get a scone, etc…

As cheesy as this sounds, I put Post-it notes on my computer to remind me of things and help me keep track of time. Usually I don’t need to write anything on them, just the fact that I pause and think why they are there helps me remember to do things. A ribbon on a finger, rubber band on the wrist, et cetera, are other ways that I don’t really use.

As far as focusing goes, when I start to actually do something I turn off or disable my computer and television and sit down with some friends. Usually I can talk and work better than doing something on my computer simultaneously.

Schedule your time, get up early, eat regular meals. Turn your phone and e-mail off, and check both a regular intervals, like before lunch, and late afternoon. Get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Take adderall.

If that’s too intense for you, do take yourself away from communication devices of any kind ad make a checklist of thing that you have to do. It always feels really good to be able to show yourself how much you’ve done; it’s a really good motivator.
