Ear pressure relief please!

Asked by mandabee (6points) December 19th, 2008

I went to the doctor close to 3 weeks ago with ear pressure. He said I had an ear infection and gave me a low dose antibiotic because I’m nursing my 4 month old baby. Well, the antibiotic seemed to help at first then- nothing. I still have the ear pressure and not too keen on going back to this doctor. Can anyone help me? I’d really like to hear again.

I’ve dealt with this many times in the past. It sucks majorly, the worst pain in my life hands down. Whatever you do, don’t stick anything in your ear to try and give you relief, it simply does not work and you risk damaging your ear and hearing. If you completed your course of antibiotics and they worked but now it’s back, to me this says the infection is still there and fighting strong. Go find another doctor if you don’t like your other one, but you do need to see one, you probably need a higher course of antibiotics. You might have to stop breast feeding until you are cured, although I am not a doctor, your doctor will be able to fully clarify these things.

Go back to SOME doctor! If the antibiotics worked for a while then you DO have an infection. Left untreated it will only get worse. Please see a doctor. You can’t get to sick, you have a baby to take care of.

This is going to sound odd, but my little sister used to get really bad earaches and ear pressure, and this really helped relieve some of the pain.
Take some regular cooking oil or olive oil and warm it up in the microwave, make sure its not hot enough to burn!
Lay down on your side with the hurt ear facing up, and using your finger or an eyedropper put a few drops of warm oil into your ear. The oil helps loosen up and gunk that’s in your ear canal, and remove fluid buildup.

I hope this helps!

JacobHoHo’s technique may help ease some pain. However, if it’s an infection, which we know it is since you had antibiotics, it won’t really help eliminate the pain, because the pressure is building from the inside of the ear, but the oil only touches the outside. It’s still worth a try – I know I entertained EVERY single idea I came across when I had my pain as I was in tears because of it. Sadly nothing but regular pain killers helped. Well that’s not true, when my ear drum burst it sure felt good for a bit, until it started hurting way worse.

If you don’t want to go back to the same doctor, but don’t know of another doctor to go to, you could always try going to the nearest Walgreens Care Clinic. They have nurse practitioners that can prescribe antiobiotics and do almost everything a doctor can. My experiences with them have been good. Hope you feel better!

I have used Chlortabs… (chlorpheniramine maleate) when I have had ear pressure and throbbing in one ear. Works quickly – it is just a basic antihistamine. Yellow tablet. Hope it helps you too!

Don’t ignore the advice above though…

BTW, the throbbing I am referring to does not hurt – I can just hear it and no it is not my pulse…

i just went to the doctor the other day because both of my ears were hurting and i had a lot of pressure. she just told me that i had fluid behind my ears and to get a really good sinus decongestant. she offered a prescription one, or she said a good over the counter kind would be fine. i got some and it helped a lot.

Decongestant makes sense – I have not idea why an antihistamine works for me!!
