How do you plan on celebrating the 15th of January?

Asked by madcapper (3105points) December 27th, 2008

This is Martin Luther King Jr.s true birthday and the 19th of this year is bullshit so how do you plan on spending it?

I’ll probably get up, eat food, fluther, work on my college stuff, eat food, look for a new job, fluther, eat food, see a movie with a friend and then sleep.

Same old, same old.

I don’t know anyone who does anything special for MLK Day.

I don’t do anything for his old birthday. I also don’t do anything for Lincolns birthday or most of my living friends birthdays. It’s just a birthday. Would you celebrate Jesus’s birthday if Santa was not around? Birthdays are not as big a deal when you are dead.

I barely do anything special for my birthday…probably won’t for MLK’s either.

The 15th is my older son’s birthday. We named him so that his initials are MLK (not so easy since our last name starts with an ‘O’). So we celebrate MLK with a cake, gifts, and all around gaiety.

I am totally full of it. My older son’s birthday is the 15th, but how would we look having named our kid MLK? I’m sorry, though, I couldn’t resist.

I don’t get excited about any holiday, really. And while I admire MLK, I don’t feel the need to commemorate his birthday, real or arbitrary.

I don’t even know what country I’ll be in tomorrow, you want me to tell you what I’ll be doing 3 weeks from now? I’ll probably spend the day being tortured by Albanian mafia if the way things have been going is any indication.

I don’t really celebrate his birthday, but I do go to the parades. I think he was a great man so, I try to show some kind of recognition.

January 15th is my birthday as well as MLK’s. I though it was cool when they declared it a holiday – too bad they changed it to a “nearest Monday” one.

This year I will be Florida on my b’day and hope to celebrate it with friends by renting a pontoon boat on the Homassassa River and going to see the mamatees that are wintering there.

My friend’s birthday is that day.
And that isn’t janbb.
Just kidding janbb is my best friend in the whole entire world….

But yeah I usually go to Carol’s house and celebrate.

I just asked this question as a joke because thats my b-day too!

I usually read something appropriate to commemorate the occasion. MLK Jr.‘s birthday that is, not mapcapper’s birthday. :^>

Happy shared birthday, madcapper!

And I lurve you too, 90skid.

Around here it’s a big day of service. A lot of people get involved in one community project or another. I think this is the most meaningful holiday, because I was alive while he was alive and I can see what he did. Other famous people who died before I was alive—not so much.

However, coming as it does, at the beginning of the year, in cold and when we’re cleaning up and recovering from the holidays, as well as getting ready for the next semester which starts the next day, we don’t actually join the community day of service.

@ janbb you too!
@ cyndyh why not my birthday? I am sure you can find some very interesting literature about me out there…

cyndyh's avatar

Hey, if you point me toward it I very well may give it a read, too. :^>

if i remember i’ll maybe think about him a little more and hope that his ghost/zombie/whatever self is eaves dropping on my thoughts.
if not, it’s okay, i’m sure he knows i still respect him dearly.

It is also the semester break and grades due on the 17th so I will be following his dream of making education accessible for all children by filling out grade documents.
