Do you ever read more than one book at a time?

Asked by LostInParadise (31916points) January 11th, 2009

I have lately been finding myself reading two or three books. I mostly read non-fiction and I find there is only so much I can absorb from a given book on a given day, so I will switch to another one.

All the time!! I will read about 2–3 at a time, I will switch on and off depending on what I am in the mood to read that day. Although I will not do this if one of the books I am reading is absolutely amazing. In that case I can’t bother with the other books.

Do I ever read just one book at a time?

I rarely read one book at a time.

Somewhere, my mom has a picture of me as a four or five-year-old, sitting on the floor with several books propped open around me. It’s an old habit.

I have always read multiple books. Although I agree with IBERnineD if a book is really, really awesome then I will just stick with it until I reach the end.

Me too all of that.

usually. most of the time i have at least 2 books going at one time, but often 3. it’s usually something like this:

- romantic smut or suspenseful mystery for my own entertainment
– an educational book for my own personal edification (health-related or historical, for example)
– a professional book i’m reading for participation in my teachers’ book club at school

Yes, I am juggling 3 right now. Marley & Me is one of them and I doubt I will finish it as I know the ending.

Glad to know I’m not alone! I am reading three different ones right now.

I usually read 3 at a time.

Wow I am surprised by the above answers. I hate reading more than one book at a time. I like to devote myself entirely to one book as much as possible. During the school year, there isn’t much time to read for leisure anyway. So it takes about 2 weeks to finish one book (as opposed to what could be read in one day). Reading 3 different books would probably just confuse me since I can barely remember the parts I have read already from just one book.

I usually read 12 or more at a time.
Some I’ve read before, some new, I just pick up whatever I think is interesting and start on in.

For me it’s usually 1–4 books at a time. I try to keep my concurrent books at least somewhat dissimilar. Right now I’m reading four books, but one is a novel, one is poetry, one is philosophy, and one is on audio engineering.

At work we have times when everybody reads for 20 mins, and so I usually have short stories at work currently Isaac Asimov. At home I have a a mystery and I am reading a couple of new texts this year.

I read anywhere from three to five at a time, as well as a half dozen magazines, and of course all of the Fluther activity. ;)

So, are we now a literary genre?

skfinkel's avatar

I always have a couple of books going. It makes me so happy. Different books for different moods, different times of day. Sometimes it just happens accidentally, I pick up a book for one small thing, and then I get caught.

I believe that I can safely say that some of my most favorite times are being grabbed by a book so strongly that everything else takes a secondary role while I read.

yeah, i’m reading the fountainhead, elliott smith, and rereading the perks of being a wallflower right now.

I usually prefer to read one book at a time, interspersed with magazines. At times I will keep an additional book in my car to read during waiting times and such.

I generally have several books going at one time. I usually have a bathtub book, a downstairs book and a book in the truck for waiting various places. Sometimes I misplace a book for a bit and so start another one before finishing the first. Then I find the errant book and finish it up (if it is well-written enough that I don’t want to skip to the last chapter). I read a mix of fiction and non-fiction depending on what volumes I have run across that catch my fancy.

I like to read only one book at a time so I can concentrate on that story and its characters exclusively. In past attempts to read more than one book at a time, I’ve found myself losing track of important details in both books which frustrated me so I stopped doing that.

All the time and it drives me nuts! I would love to be able to read one at a time, but I guess I have adult-onset attention deficit disorder. There are so many books and so little time!

I usually do have more than one book going at a time. Like Darwin describes, I have them divided by purpose. There’s one by my bed that’s relaxing, a small paperback in my bag for when I’m out and waiting for someone, and more during the day around the house or coffee-shop books.

rowenaz's avatar

All the time because I leave the books in different places. One at school, one at my parents, one by the bed….

bridold's avatar

I definitely read more than one book at a time, but they are usually different topics and only one novel at a time.

This has a lot to do with the books I need to read for my classes and my varying intrests in a bunch of different topics.
