Do beat boxers have some certain special physical lungs and tongue abilities? (Same question goes for yodeling)

Asked by archaeopteryx (1004points) January 26th, 2009

Does a beat boxer have some kind of a special ability that makes him ”able” of performing and producing those sound effects? Or is he just a normal person with normal lungs and tongue and all he had to do was practice?

And what about yodelers?

I’d say practice. I’m not great at it, but I’ve picked up the ability to hold a beat.

The key with beatboxing is the way it all runs together. If you slowed the routines right down you’d find, obviously, the performer is only making one sound at a time but in such quick succession they sound like they’re synchronius when performed faster. This is why Rahzel can sound like he’s singing at the same time as making a beat.

Want to have some fun? You can start learning simply by saying ‘Boots’, ‘Cats’ – ‘Boots’ is your bass drum noise and ‘Cats’ is your snare – so try and say the former in a deep voice, the latter harshly and kind of clicking the back of your throat as you do it.

Yodelers, I do not kno-eee-oooooooow.

I think it’s more practice and dedication than lung or mouth structure; however it’s worthwhile to note that there could be a mouth or lung size that makes beatboxing or yodeling easier to do. Bit mostly it’s just practice and dedication.

I think it’s just a stronger desire to be annoying than most people have. :-P

Really? I thought he had two voice boxes and that’s why he could do that..

Actually, I look at it in a sci-fi way.
I think beat boxers pay a couble million dollars to get a nano DJ surgically attached to their lungs (or tongue, I’m not sure). And then they just learn how to use it. :-)

Come on, I mean look at Taylor Ware for example. Her yodeling is amazing! Especially at America’s Got Tallent back in 2006. :)

It’s hard to explain how to beat box. It’s just something you imitate based on hearing someone else do it or trying to copy music you’re hearing. As everyone says above practice is key you won’t get it right away. You learn to position your tongue in certain ways and breath at different points. Some even learn to use 2 levels of pitch so they can have 2 beats and/or sing while laying down beats. It’s certainly a talent but a special physical ability.. eh, I don’t think so.
