Have we come to a dead end with the evolution of the men's common "neck tie"?

Asked by tennesseejac (3778points) February 11th, 2009

Over the past 400 years the tie has changed from this thing to scarves to bowties, but it seems there have been no major changes in the past 100 years.

For my day job I have to wear a tie everyday and have grown to despise this standard of men’s fashion, but at least I get to choose my own and sometimes I rock the piano key neck tie (which I think was a highlight in the evolution of the tie)

What do you think about it?
Do you wear ties?

Over the last several decades ties have changed shape though.

Ties allow for some creativity/colour in an otherwise formal business context, but yet you always look professional. It’s great. Why would a great thing change if it has little to nothing to improve?

Ties are sexy. I love it when my bf wears them.

However, I think that because ties are a standard icon of the business world, there isn’t a lot of room for personal taste or innovation.

I personally kind of like ties. Perhaps it’s because I am not forced to wear one every day. I know they haven’t changed much; however, I haven’t been around very long (relatively speaking).

at least mugatu would be happy.

ties rotate between wide and skinny. the 80s brought us the square-bottom Alex P. Keaton tie.

some people wear bollo ties shudder

can’t top a classic though.

I never understood why ties became so ingrained in Western dress for men. I wear ties only for costumes, like when I dressed as a parochial schoolgirl for a Halloween party a couple of years ago. I can do a half-Windsor, but eeesh! Whatever. I loosened that puppy up by the second drink. I can’t see how men can stand them.

My husband wears a tie every day, and I dig them! I don’t dig that some of them cost as much as a pair of my shoes.

I have somewhere around a hundred, 5 formal, and the rest are a variety of cartoons, piano keyboard, guitar neck, fish, Christmas tree, etc.

The people at work seek me out just to see what the days tie looks like.

I like neckties, as a woman I am not forced to wear them, but I do like a man in a flashy necktie with a well tailored suit. Bow ties are great for weddings and black tie events, but let’s face it, an everyday bow tie is just nerdy. We might not want to wish for the tie to evolve too much further, remember the bolo craze of the 1980’s?

Once when my middle son saw his father walk downstairs wearing a tie for a job interview he looked at him and said “Hey Dad, you’re wearing a leash.” Truer words may never have been spoken.

Man, I hope this keeps evolving. I am waiting for the little holographic projector that just projects a tie on the front of my shirt.

ties stay around because we keep wearing them. one of my three sons is very fascinated with ties and he is only 8 years old, so the trend continues.
