All of them tell the truth some of the time. Politics is a lot like business: people will generally act in their own self-interest. So if politicians seem like they’re telling the truth, and they have no reason to lie, they’re probably telling the truth. If they’re saying something that will result in them getting a huge campaign contribution then they may or may not be saying what is true.

In terms of hitting the real issues, each candidate has their own perspective on what issues are important and what issues can be dealt with later. The trick is to find a candidate who cares about the same things you do, and has the same ideas about how they should be solved. You probably won’t find a perfect candidate, but you may be surprised with how much some of the ideas of politicians match up with your own.
