General Question

I have read several questions and answers on fluther about not washing one's hair at all (or very rarely). To people who practice this, do you exercise?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12574points) February 18th, 2009

I read that last question where one person said that they didn’t wash their hair, and I can’t get it out of my head.

Do you exercise? Like really intense, can’t get enough air, wear-yourself-completely out, sweat soaking through your clothes exercise?

Because when I do that, my hair looks absolutely disgusting afterward, and I just cannot possibly imagine not washing it.

So, I’m just trying to figure it out.

Thank you.

Yes, but I have incredibly, incredibly dry hair. I mostly wash to combat any stinky hair thing going on, and when I do, I wash with conditioner.

My scalp gets itchy after just one day of not washing, so I don’t see how people can do it. I guess I could go to the original conversation to find out, but alas, I’m too lazy.

here is the most recent one: http://www.fluther.com/disc/35253/how-long-can-you-go-without-washing-your-hair-without-your
i was too lazy to link it the first time, but then came up in my activities, so that made it easy.

jamspoon said they never wash theirs. maybe i should have just pm’ed him/her, but i know there are other people too. (like andrew)

There are sites, and I don’t feel like looking them up, but one was referenced not long ago, telling how you can go shampoo-free. After “detoxing” from shampooing for x amount of time, the scalp will go back to naturally producing just enough oil to keep the hair healthy, as opposed to going on overdrive and always producing too much because it’s constantly stripped away from washing.

I wouldn’t do it. But it’s supposedly possible.

@poofandmook – I’ve heard of that before, as well. I forget how long, but after so many days – supposedly, the smell isn’t really there. I’m just not that ready to detox, I guess.

Right now, I’m going through chemo, lets just say that hair really isn’t that much of an issue for me. Normally, though, I tend to wash my hair, daily – but only condition it every other days. The shampoo I use is very mild, because I was it daily. I run, I work out and I sweat! I’m just not ok with not shampooing.

I worked with a lady that only washes her hair once a week. She uses powder in her hair a couple days a week. She has beautiful hair, but I just can’t do the powder thing.

Yep…I sweat my ass off daily at the gym. I used to be able to go a whole week sometimes w/o washing and my hair looked great (until about day 6 :)! Now I have to wash every 3–4 days. But my head never gets itchy or anything, like people are saying. Guess I’m lucky.

@melanie81 – do you rinse it at all?

melanie81's avatar

@La_chica_gomela Nope; I just blow-dry the ends and straighten any strays. My hair is pretty short, but very thick and dry…it would take me an extra 20 mins to blow-dry from a complete rinse. Depending on how sweaty my scalp gets from exercise, I’ll shampoo more or less often during the week.

Not sure if this is what you’re talking about, but tho I don’t use shampoo, but another method – i do indeed wash my hair, and actually find it healthier than it was when it was shampooed.

Good in this economy, too, way cheaper. And eventually once your hair becomes stronger from its natural oils (no longer stripped away by shampoo), you won’t need to use as many hair products.
