When I do recall my dreams, I can decode them.

I found that the best way to help remember more of your dreams is to keep a journal on the table next to your bed. As soon as you wake up, jot down what you remember about the dream, even if it’s just a few details. This might help you recall more of the dream later on.

Suposebly when you remind yourself to wake up in the middle of your REM you remember more.

Both @KrystaElyse and @seVen are right and have said what I want to say.

You remember your dreams when you awake in the night. Light sleepers remember more dreams because you are getting awaken directly out of them. We cycle through our sleep many times a night. So you may dream but stay asleep and then go through another cycle thus making the dream quite distant. For heavy sleepers most of what they remember is the dreams they have just before waking.

So having said that if you want to remember more dreams you need to awake more often or at a different time. You may have your alarm set during a different part of your typical sleep cycle. I would recommend trying to set your alarm for say 2:00am. If you remember a dream grab your journal from the side of the bed and jot it down. Then go back to sleep. This works for many people.
