sigh I was wrong then. I didn’t count mulan or Pocahontas . . .I dont get what makes mulan a princess (But thats another question I get :p ) Im just used to seeing Jasmine, Belle, Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel and Aurora but you guys are right thanks.

Enough to give little girls high expectations.

Ah, you got stuck in traditional images of princesses. I am not sure why they include Cinderella here, since she wasn’t the daughter of a king, that I recall, or Mulan, who was the daughter of a warrior. What about Esmerelda from Hunchback of Notre Dame? Why is she not a princess, and Mulan is?

live_rose's avatar

Esmeralda is on the same level as mulan both got with a warrior/ captain of the guard. So it doesnt make sense i guess since she didnt get with the main character. Whatever, mulan being a princess is odd to me. dont get me wrong I like her as a character she’s just not a princess.

@WillWorkForChocolate where do you get that number from?

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@live_rose I was just being silly. :)

live_rose's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate my roommate guessed like 30 . . .and she wasn’t kidding. Your guess is as good as any :)

i don’t understand why cinderella, ariel, and belle are always splashed all over all that merch, but jasmine never is. i think she’s just as legit/awesome of a princess, if not more, than those other skanks princesses.

i’ve never seen mulan, so i didn’t even know she was a princess.

live_rose's avatar

@tiffyandthewall Belle is not a skank . . .all the others honestly couldn’t care less. But the ones are on the merchandise are Snow white, Aurora, Ariel, belle, Cinderella and Jasmin . . .but jasmine is kind of pushed off in a corner.

@filmfann Cinderella and Belle are on the list because they married princes, thus becoming princesses.

Mulan and Pocahontas are on the list…. because it’s easier to merchandise them as “Disney princesses” than “Disney heroines who aren’t princesses but you love them anyway”. :-)

MrItty's avatar

Also, don’t forget about the newest one, Princess Gizelle of Andalasia, from Enchanted. She’s probably not in the Disney Princesses merchandising line, but she was a princess in an animated Disney movie.

live_rose's avatar

@MrItty Gizelle isn’t an announced disney princess but there are going to be 2 more princesses from upcoming movies. Tiana from the princess and the frog and Rapunzel. The list is getting too big. There should be a set amount of classic disney princesses.

I DONT THINK THAT MULAN OR BELLE SHOULD BE THOUGHT OF AS DISNEY PRINCESSES. MULANS DAD IS JUST AN OLD MAN AND BELLES DAD IS JUST AN INVENTOR. BELLE MARRIES INTO ROYALTY IN THE END KIND OF (IF THE BEAST IS STILL TECHNICALLY A PRINCE) BUT MULAN IS NEVER ROYALTY. THEY ARENT PRINCESSES.

umm is this really a debate over which fantasy characters should and should not be princesses….

Jack79's avatar

wasn’t Anastasia Disney’s too? Or was she not a princess?

Darwin's avatar

I figure Disney should know who they want to call a princess. That is why I went to the official site.

Pocahontas is considered a princess because her father is the chief of the tribe, ie. the “ruler.” As his daughter should would be the equivalent of a princess.

Belle does indeed marry a prince, thus becoming, as Princess Di did, a princess.

Mu Lan comes close to marrying a prince in the sequel, but doesn’t. She is actually the only Disney “Princess” who is neither born nor wed into royalty.

However, little girls don’t pay a lot of attention to details like that.

And @Jack79 – Anastasia was not Disney. The movie was released by 20th century Fox.

live_rose's avatar

@Darwin yeah I mean Disney princesses are really for kids. I just got in a huge discussion over it. . .that and a handful of other Disney related questions. Its not a huge issue like life or death I just find it something kind of fun to talk about it.

live_rose's avatar

and the beast is prince Adam . . .so yeah belle does become a princess.

Staalesen's avatar

Pocahontas were the daughter of the chief ? Or do I remember wrong… so in one way she is a princess then…

live_rose's avatar

@Staalesen yeah yeah she was his daughter. She is way more of a princess than Mulan. i dont disagree that she’s a princess. Im just saying when I think of the disney princesses I dont think of her.

Staalesen's avatar

@live_rose I know what you mean :)

MrItty's avatar

@live_rose The name “Adam” has nothing to do with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. That was the name of the Beast in the short-lived non-Disney live-action television series. The Beast in Disney’s movie has no name other than “The Beast” and “a prince”.

fireside's avatar

What about Princess Dot and her sister Princess Atta from A Bug’s Life?

And then there was Princess Mia and her diaries…

MrItty's avatar

A Bug’s Life was made by Pixar before it became a part of Disney.

fireside's avatar

It’s still Disney property as of the asking of the question.
What makes a Disney princess?

live_rose's avatar

@MrItty I know and honestly that was kind of a crappy series at that. Just when I refer to the beast when he’s human I like to use a human name. They just called him Beast of Master in the disney movie
