Last.fm is a social music site revolving around your music taste and what you listen to. It works by “scrobbling” (adding) tracks to your profile, which you can then share with “Neighbors” (people with similar musical taste to you), “Friends” (Don’t really need to explain that) and other last.fm users.

To put it simply, it is a social network that revolves around music and musical taste.
It also has “groups”, etc like other social networks.

It also has a radio function where you can throw in a artist and it will play similar artists.

But what most people use it for is 1) The radio function or 2) The recommendation function, which takes music in your profile and recommends similar stuff. The recommendations feature is why I use it.

And mine is here. The Fluther Group is here.

Yeah I went to them but I didn’t really understand what it was

eambos's avatar

I use it to keep track of what I’ve been listening to.

My husband and I are in the fluther group. I’m pobutters and he is bearspot. Come play with us tink!

Tink's avatar

I might just do that :)
Can I use my fluther name?

DeanV's avatar

Use any name you want. People will likely recognize you.

jonsblond's avatar

Whatever name you want. Obviously blondesjon and I didn’t use our Fluther names. We let everyone know who we were of course. :)

Tink's avatar

I’ll go make one. I’ll use Tink1113 :)

Don’t forget to get the Scrobbler so you can actually add your iTunes music or what you listened to on your iPod.

Tink's avatar

Weeee there’s an app for it!
@dverhey – How do you do that

jonsblond's avatar

Add a bunch of music to your library or you’ll get a lot of repeats.

Tink's avatar

@dverhey -It won’t let me from my iPod :(
Ok I just joined what now?

DeanV's avatar

Download the scrobbler and start listening to some music. There should then be a “Listening Now” dialogue on your page.

Tink's avatar

From the app?

DeanV's avatar

Listen to some music in iTunes. (On your computer)

Tink's avatar

I don’t get it I’m stupid
@anyone – can you only do it on a mac?

jonsblond's avatar

You’re not stupid! I can’t even post my high school picture.

Tink's avatar

Thanks :)

I can’t help you a whole lot more here, but are you using a iPod touch for it, or are you using the desktop app? I do suggest you read the help documentation for the app, mostly because I use mac and am not incredibly familiar with the iPod Touch or Windows app.

Tink's avatar

Yeah iPod touch 2nd gen.
With the app downloaded from the app store
And I haven’t upgraded it to 3.0 yet

DeanV's avatar

Well the iTouch app only does radio, so enter the app, login to your account if you haven’t already, and type in an artist you would like to listen to radio for, i.e. Muse. It should start playing a song either by that artist or by a similar artist. You then should be able to tag that artist, see other people who listen to the same artist, view similar artists, etc.

The song you are listening too should also be added to your library page.

Tink's avatar

so I should do it by computer?

DeanV's avatar

I would recommend downloading that one app I linked above to your computer and opening it when you sync your iPod so you can add the tracks you played on that to your profile. The iPhone app is good for radio, but it doesn’t do much more.

Tink's avatar

I should huh? I have windows vista will it work?

DeanV's avatar

Yup. Provided Vista is fine, the app should to. Just don’t forget to keep it open when listening to music or syncing.

Tink's avatar

So it’s in like another window? Ok by listening to music on iTunes does that mean previewing songs?

DeanV's avatar

No. Music in your library. Full tracks.

Tink's avatar

I don’t buy it though I use limewire

DeanV's avatar

Doesn’t matter. As long as it’s there.

Don’t like limewire myself.

Tink's avatar

@dverheyYou don’t
So like when you plug your iPod to it? How does it know when your listening to it though

DeanV's avatar

It doesn’t until you sync it with your computer. Then it will add the stuff you have listened to in the last few days.

Tink's avatar

Is there a place for that?

DeanV's avatar

Um… Your iPod should hold your recently played info. (That’s how it gets accurate play count information). I do believe the last.fm windows app just takes that information and adds it to your profile.

Tink's avatar

Ok so I can’t do it from my iPod then

DeanV's avatar

Not yet. I’m sure somebody will make an app for that soon, with people being able to run apps in the background now.

Tink's avatar

Yeah genious!

@anyone
