What is the recommendation for working out while sick?

I hear so many vary opinions about this topic. I went to the gym to do a light cardio session. I only really had a sore throat but I felt like I was trudging though mud, and I am someone who works out frequently so I am not out of cardio shape. I was speaking to someone and was informed that when working out while sick or getting sick you are reducing hurting yourself because you are using white blood cells for muscle tissue damage that could otherwise be used to help resist a viral or bacterial infection.

Doing a hard workout while coming down with something can make you more sick. I would suggest doing something light but static like yoga, followed by a sit in a Sauna.

The short answer is no. According to this article on CNN, you should listen to your body and rest when feeling sick. By working out you are putting stress on your immune system and you may also spread your illness to others. And when feeling better, startup slowly and not at 100% until your completely recovered.

There are times when it is good to rest. It would seem that being sick is one of those times. Especially if the workout felt like “trudging through mud.” Your body is speaking to you—and why not listen?

Listen to your body. It’s probably telling you to take it easy for a bit.

When I feel like I’m getting sick, sometimes a light workout does make me feel better though. But if you’re in bed sick and feel like you don’t want to move, then I would suggest staying home until you’re better. Make sure you’re getting vitamins and water. Fresh fruits and veggies do wonders for your body! Make some home made soup and watch a fun movie on the couch! :)

Generally, no, don’t do it. Eat more, rest more, do everything possible to keep your body from being stressed. If it’s just a sore throat or a drippy nose, you might be able to do some cardio, but scale it back several notches. If you’re used to an 8 minute mile, go for a 12 minute mile (FORCE yourself to run that slow). If you’re at 12, take a brisk walk.

Furthermore, you’re doing the public a disservice by using gym equipment while sick.
