What's a good backpack or messenger bag for a computer?

Asked by jpasq03 (233points) July 16th, 2009

I want a new backpack or messenger bag for school this fall. I’m going to be carrying a 13” MacBook and some books/papers. I plan on upgrading to a 15” MacBook Pro next fall and would like to use the same bag if possible.

I see the http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/laptop/laptop-messenger-style/laptop-messenger#product=2-78703 and think the medium size will work best, opinions?

That seems pricey for the size. And in the one view it shows the computer and then in the other it shows other things. It doesn’t look like it holds that much together. Lemme check something for ya.

Timbuk2s are pricey but the general consensus is that they are worth it. They are super bags that hold up through absolutely anything. Most of my friends who ride bikes in the city use a Timbuk2 bag.

I recommend the bags from InCase (http://goincase.com) or the bags from Chrome (http://www.chromebagsstore.com/). Both look great and are in the same price range as Timbuktu.

Here are a few I found A , B, C
And there are some coupons Here

I don’t know how big you want to go. I just think, from that other picture that it looks a bit small.

Thanks guys, I’ll look at them in more detail.

I think I’m won back over to the traditional backpack.

@jpasq03here is a clearance on laptop backpacks. I bought my Targus Laptop backpack here and I LOVE it. A seam started to split. They exchanged it no questions asted.

Sorry if I am being over involved. Second only to tech stuff for me is back back and the like.

I use the Timbuk2 bags. I have several of them, including the laptop messenger that you’ve already found. I have a 15” MacbookPro and the medium size bag which has plenty of space for accessories. I even carried two laptops in it when I had to have a PC for work.

When not computing, I use a classic messenger (no laptop slot) for school/coaching/general things and it is still in great shape after daily use for 5 years. A little dirty, but holding strong considering how much it’s been through. I’ve never had any complaints or issues.

The bags have a waterproof lining. If I get caught in the rain I never worry about what’s inside.

They are a bit expensive, but I customize mine and get it shipped to my mom’s house so I can get it as my Christmas present. I think they can see me coming from a mile away when I get online to order a new bag. (I have a separate laptop sleeve, a Metro for my ‘purse’, and cell phone holsters in addition to my two messengers…)

I’m somewhat partial to Booq bags for their industrial design, warranty and utility. On their website, there are several that are closeout and in your price range.

I have the Boa M slimline case, and it held both my 15” MBP and now 13” MBP. I’ve had it for going on three years now and not a single rip, tear, zipper or strap problem. I can attest to their awesome ruggedness and build quality.

Their new “Boa Nerve S” model looks pretty sweet.
