General Question

Can you recommend some movies for my brand-new netflx subscription?

Asked by kenmc (11773points) July 27th, 2009

Just signed up today, and since it’s the free trial membership, I thought I’d ask the collective what they’d get.

My tastes are along the Classics of all genres… I love horror movies, film noir, and some comedies.

I avoid action movies at all costs.

I’m of the idea that film is an art form, and should be treated as such. Any examples of film as art would be great.

P.S., I Love You
it’s really great, a beautiful story with just the right splash of comedy to lighten it up a bit.

I just watched Cashback on Netflix (they had it up to watch on the site so you dont have to wait to get it in the mail which is cool) Its about this guy who freezes time and draws naked women and its all about love an isolation and people. Its very artsy but its still funny.

Unrelated, but why doesn’t Netflix rent out porn? They could make a fortune!

Have you seen Lost in Translation or Garden State? The Girl in the Cafe is one you might like.

(I don’t think you’d like PS I love you…a little bit too romantic.)

You can always use it to watch a lot of the old horror movies that you probably haven’t seen in a long time.

Anything by Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, Punch Drunk Love, Hard Eight)

Anything by Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Pi, The Fountain, The Wrestler)

Anything by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige or either of the last 2 Batman films, even though they are very action oriented)

Anything by Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Bottle Rocket)

Anything by the Coen Brothers (Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Intollerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers, No Country For Old Men, Burn After Reading)

Anything by Quentin Tarrantino (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Grindhouse, Jackie Brown).

Anything by Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel)

All these movies have depth, they are true films.

@Ivan You should watch movies. They’re good.

sweetteaindahouse's avatar

I would have to say that a good classic would be Young Frankenstein. You can watch it directly on your computer.

Just ‘browse’ your favoeite genres. That’s how I found mine!

I had a chance to get Netflix, and I was given HBO movies for free, but after six months, I still haven’t seen anything I am interested in even ordering or looking at.

Eraserhead
Adaptation
The Signal
Quarantine (is way better than Cloverfield)
Choke

jeanna's avatar

@Pol_is_aware You liked Choke? He and I have seen that. It was a disappointment.

filmfann's avatar

Choke wasn’t as good as the book. They really rushed making the movie. I think they filmed it all in 3 weeks.
I love most of the lists on here, but I have to take issue with Grand Illusion. That is completely overrated.

zephyr826's avatar

Bottle Shock. I just saw it, and it made my week.

janbb's avatar

@filmfann Taking issue with Grand Illusion? Iconoclast! Actually, I can understand why you might not like it – it does get a bit draggy, but it blew me away the first time I saw it.

Shecky_Johnson's avatar

Push. I don’t like action films much either, But it was shot very artisticly with great color and great shots. And the story line is very gripping. All the action makes sense (my biggest peeve is things blowing up for NO other reason but to get the audiences attention). If you don’t like it, I’ll mail you a dollar.

Shecky_Johnson's avatar

@Pol_is_aware Have you seen [REC]? It is what Quarantine was based on.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038988/

Thought it might be neat to see both verions.

Congratulations! NetFlix is a great service, that rare company these days that delivers exactly what it promises, including make-goods. I have been a very satisfied customer for more than seven years. I don’t watch television at all, but I go through a lot of movies and some old series. Just finished the last episode of The Forsyte Saga from 1967.

Spend a little time assigning ratings to movies you have already seen, concentrating on the ones you like best. NetFlix will then be able to make recommendations for you based on your preferences. For instance, I get a lot of recommendations in the “classic drama” genre because I have rated so many of those highly. I also give a “not interested” to certain types of film every time they come up so those will never be recommended for me. NetFlix knows I won’t be renting anime.

Pol_is_aware's avatar

@jeanna , @boots, I liked Choke enough to watched it twice before returning to the rental store.

i havn’t read the book

@Shecky_Johnson, Thanks mate, I did not realize that. I really liked Quarantine best for its acting, but I will check out [REC] out of mere curiosity.

Film as art form:

“Bluebeard” with John Caradine. It’s an old black and white.

“20 bucks” might qualify. Certainly a cool concept, anyway.
