Windows uses virtual memory to augment the actual Ram in your machine. What this does is it creates a file on your hard drive where programs can store information just like physical memory.

That error message could be caused by a number of things. Normally the page file “virtual memory”, should be 1.5x the actual physical memory in your machine.

For example if you have 1gb of ram your page file should be 1.5gb

For actual causes of this you should check out this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826513

@NerdRageIT has it pretty much down. Solutions would be, of course, increasing your paging file. But if you’re dipping into VRAM that much, you should upgrade your memory. I would find a tech-savvy friend to show you how if you’ve never done it yourself, as well as show you proper protocol on anti-static and things like that. Plus, you don’t want to buy the wrong size…

Memory is the cheapest and easiest thing you can get to upgrade your computer. If you’re dipping into VRAM, you’ll see a performance boost in faster load times once you get the upgrade once the computer gets used to the new hardware.

I added 1 GB of RAM a year ago or more. Have been watching old LOST episodes and you-tubing a lot.
When I added the GB of RAM, should I have increased the virtual mem paging file?

The paging file size is usually automatically managed by the system so adding an extra Gb shouldn’t have been a problem unless the settings for the paging file had been altered from the default. If the paging file was set to a custom size then adding the extra memory may have caused the problem.

@Lightlyseared LOL, nope, I never ventured there.

** FOR WINDOWS XP **

Although not all techies would call this the standard (1.5x your RAM is the standard), its perfectly fine to do (as long as your hard drive is not almost full):

- RIght-click my computer and choose PROPERTIES
– Read the part of this page that says ### OF RAM and remember the number
– Click on the ADVANCED tab
– Under PERFORMANCE, choose SETTINGS
– Click on the ADVANCED tab
– Click CHANGE (at the bottom)
– In the middle, choose CUSTOM and enter 2x the amount of RAM that you have. Ex: If ### OF RAM said 514, enter 1028 in both the INITIAL SIZE and MAXIMUM SIZE boxes.

After doing this, you shouldn’t receive that warning message again. If you do, your computer is not capable of running your chosen applications and needs more RAM, at a minimum.

Don’t forget how cheap new computer systems are today. Don’t get ripped off on 1GB of RAM for $100 instead of buying a computer 20x faster for $400.

Good luck
