Where is Dory from Finding Nemo, quoting from in this following line?

Asked by zaperrer (19points) August 10th, 2009

“No eating here tonight, no eating here tonight, no, no, no, eating here tonight, you’re on a diet!”
– Dory, Finding Nemo

Does anyone know if this is a reference to something? It seems like part of a song but I looked for a month and couldn’t find anything.

Does the tune sound anything like the one for There’s a Meeting Here Tonight ? If so, I’d say it’s a parody.

It’s probably a pun on the folk song, “There’s a Meeting Here Tonight.” I bet Jeruba’s typing the same thing now.

Yup! It’s an old spiritual, Gail, with many variants on YouTube. I can’t speak for the allusion, though, because I’ve never seen the movie referenced in the question.

I seem to remember Peter, Paul and Mary, The Limeliters and The KIngston Trio singing this. IAC, I know the lyrics by heart (not too hard to learn.)

And I too didn’t see Finding Nemo.

@Jeruba: You’ve never seen Finding Nemo?!?!!?!?!?
It is one of the best films of all time. I highly recommend it.

@hearkat: And you’re not recommending it to me?

hearkat's avatar

@gailcalled: Ooops! I didn’t see that you also hadn’t seen it! I am honestly astonished!

i second that recommendation to anyone who hasn’t seen it. what a great movie!

@hearkat: I can be in only so many places at once, remember.

@gailcalled: You mean that Milo doesn’t pitch-in around the house? And all your Lurve doesn’t afford you the luxury of maid service?

Sorry, @hearkat and others. I respect your opinion, but I have a constitutional aversion to anything seductive, manipulative, and cynically sentimental, and I’m afraid that a Disney film about a lost fish would push all those buttons. My idea of one of the best films of all time is Fellini’s La Strada.

@hearkat: MIlo’s primary contribution to my well-being is his mousing ability. He brought me #24 two days ago; and to his credit, he ate only one. Last wee I discovered two tiny feet and two skinny legs, recently having been attached to a mouse.

He also wastes my time and energy by getting lost. Last night I started to call him at 6:00PM for supper. He slunk inside from somewhere at 9:48, wet (from thundershower) and grumpy. I was prepared to find his feet and legs, circled by several foxes, so exhibited overly affectionate behavior instead of stern annoyance.

Who has time for cartoons? MY Lurve gets me another day older and deeper in dept, but that would happen without it.

@Jeruba but its Pixar. And anything made by pixar is made of win. Now go watch it :)

@Jeruba and @gailcalled:
I concur with @uberbatman… Pixar has yet to disappoint.

I agree that many movies, especially “family” or “feel-good” films are highly manipulative, and I avoid those as well. But Pixar films (not ‘cartoons’) represent storytelling at its best. The fact that the animation is phenomenal is almost secondary. I assure you that it will be 100 minutes of your life well spent!
