Will an external monitor, keyboard and mouse work with my laptop?

Asked by beachwriter (361points) August 24th, 2009

All the necessary ports are present on the laptop so I’m assuming yes. Oh, and speakers, too. But then where do I put the laptop? It needs to be open to be powered on, right? Advice welcome!

you can change the power settings for what happens when you shut the lid to do nothing but turn off the display., but keep everything else running.

You can connect the mouse, keyboard and monitor to the correct ports. Your laptop should immediately recognize the keyboard and mouse.

To get the monitor to work right, you might have to go through a few different video modes. On my laptop, you press Fn and F6 at the same time. This moves you from one video mode to the next video mode: laptop screen, both laptop and montior, only monitor. You laptop may use different keys.

Yes, your laptop has to be on and open. Usually you just put it to one side when using the other monitor.

Not all laptops need to be open when powered on, if they’re not set to shut down when you close the lid, they can work when closed.

I had to get a special adaptor for the monitor to work on the MacBook, mini vga or something like that, the wireless mouse is USB and the keyboard as well. All works great with the MacBook closed. When you want to travel, just put the laptop to sleep and off you go.
