Did I get ripped on my latest phone purchase?

Asked by bumwithablackberry (932points) September 2nd, 2009

I went with AT&T, paid $50 for the phone, a Nokia e71x, and got the 900 minutes plan. They charged me an extra $30 a month for a PDA plan, yikes. Should I go back, get a non PDA phone, and lower my bill, or just say screw it?

I also have ATT and the $30 is for Internet usage I presume. You termed it a PDA plan but I’m assuming that means Internet. If it doesn’t you definitely got ripped off.

The main question you need to ask yourself is whether having Internet usage on the go is worth $360 per year to you.

I have the same thing but plan to drop the data pkg. ( Internet on the go) as soon as I return from a trip I’m planning.

Since wireless Internet is included in my rent where I live it’s just a duplication of service for me. When I started with it back last Dec. I was in transition it was worth it to me but not now.

But if you do decide to keep the data plan you may want to pay a little more for a phone and get an iPhone. That would give you maximum value of usage for that data plan.

If by PDA phone you mean it has internet and stuff like that, then I think you should go back and get that taken off and get a new phone or whatever you gotta do. 30 bucks a month is a lot for internet when, unless youre a businessman and need to check your email every 5 minutes, it’s just unnecessary. I can see where some people would need internet on their phones but for me, and I think for most people, it’s a rip off.

900 is $60 a month yes? So $90 a month for data and 900 min?
That’s pretty good.

Really, with AT&T, if you’re already paying for voice and data, just pony up and get an iPhone or a Blackberry. They are going to handle data than anything else. The extra cost for the phone is a one time deal and the iPhone 3g goes for $100 with a contract these days so it’s an extra $50 to upgrade from the nokia phone to the iPhone.

Sounds fairly reasonable to me. I pay around $170 a month for my/our cell plan. Consider the fact that I have a plan with two phones on it. The plan happens to be for the iPhone, we have the internet plan for our phones and pay somewhere around $30 per line.

Sounds decent. I don’t think you’re being screwed. How do you like your phone?

@scotielee I do like it, ATT pretty decent, and it’s great to have a phone again. Been on tough times. I haven’t had more than twenty dollars in my pocket for the last five years, and things are better now, so I think I know why it feels funny to be paying a good Benjamin a month. iPhone, that’s the holy grail, how much are those these days, with a plan, and it’s more a month than another PDA. Huh, data usage or something. Oh well, ho hum, need another job anyway. Maybe I could open a rib joint.

No, I don’t think that it would be more each month. You need to ask ATT specifically, but I’m almost certain that the $30 you already pay IS FOR the data plan so it wouldn’t matter which device accesses it.

I know all their terminology can be a bit much but I’m sure that what you are calling a PDA plan is actually the Internet access which is the data plan. Two terms=same thing.

Check with ATT. the only extra cost would be for the iPhone itself. Are you still within the 30 day time period for the trial of your current phone?

The only thing I’d make sure of, if you upgraded to the iPhone and kept the data plan, is that they didn’t increase the cost of the data because it was an iPhone. I seem to recall that the iPhone’s plan pricing structure is a bit different—my guess is, if this is the case, because that can be gotten away with, and those that stand in worshipful awe of the iPhone will gladly pay for teh snazzy. Alternately, you can keep your E71X and maybe call AT&T and have them cancel the data plan on your phone. It should, in theory, be optional.

That said, I’m wrestling with the question of whether or not I will pay for said iPhone-flavored instance of teh snazzy myself.

The data plan for the iPhone is $30 per month, which he stated he is already paying.

Also, it is possible to drop the data plan for the iphone. You just have to keep in mind that means you cannot access the 3G network for something like the continuous GPS or else they will (rightfully) charge you. The contract which you sign is for the two years of PHONE service. This is what pays off the subsidy of the iPhone. The data plan is a separate issue.

This is info that I was given by supervisors at both ATT and Apple.

Dude, I’m happy with my phone, service is good, I got a mucho neato phone, and I’m stoked. Just a little buyer’s remorse compounded by my being poor for so long.
