Is it possible for somebody to be allergic to just Cats, and not Dogs?

Asked by LeopardGecko (1237points) September 12th, 2009

I have trouble believing that somebody would be allergic to just one of these animals although I wouldn’t be surprised if it was true. Could anybody give some insight to this question?

I’m very sensitive to cats, just someone who was walking by cats can set off my slkergy, but dogs don’t bother me at all, and I sleep with one.

Yes it’s true, my mom is allergic to cats but not dogs. I think it’s because cats hair is much more finer and falls off more than dogs hair.

Yes, my Dad’s wife is highly allergic to cats but has two dogs.

@XOIIO that’s no way to talk about your girlfriend, lol

Absolutely. Folks can be very allergic to one and not at all to the other. I am not allergic to either cats or dogs, but I am very allergic to horses and rodents. My father is allergic to cats, but not to dogs, horses, or rodents.

It depends on your exposure as well as the vagaries of your own immune system.

Cat dander and dog dander are different substances.

I’m mildly allergic to cats and living with them is not good at all for me, but I’ve lived with dogs my whole life without the slightest problem.

@RareDenver good one, except I have never had a girlfriend, and most likely never will.  LOL
Sad but true

I’m allergic to cats and not dogs. Funny thing is I wasn’t when I was younger. It all started after I left Arizona, which many seem to the think creates allergies. Although, I’m not allergic to kittens, so I snuggle them as much as possible before they get bigger, lol.

@XOIIO Aw, there’s probably a girl out there for you. Somewhere.

I have always been allergic to cats, although they did not bother me at all while I was a vegan!! Something about dairy…

In fact, I during that time I had a roommate who had 6 cats. Later on when I had my own apt. I eventually adopted 2 kitties. It’s funny because by then I was no longer a vegan, yet I suffered only minor allergies.

Nowadays, since I’m no longer exposed I would have a full blown allergic reaction though. oh, and no allergies to dogs, thank goodness!

I’m allergic to cats and not dogs. I was under the impression it was the saliva and not the fur and dandruff.
I’ve had cats all my life. As long as I don’t smother my face all over a cat, I’m good. But, I do love to cuddle them which I still do.

@tink1113 it would probably be a robot that I’ve built

Yes. I am allergic to cats, and not dogs. I live in a flat with a dog. If I know I will visit a friend with a cat, I must take a Claritin at least an hour before I arrive, and even then, I can’t stay in the same place with cat in it for too long. Itchy, watery eyes that get puffy all on their own; runny nose, congestion, sneezing, body itchiness, boo! :(

My wife is highly allergic to cat dander, but dogs are no problem. Like I’ve said in previous threads, cats are trouble, stay away from them. =)

Yes, I was tested for both at an allergy clinic (it took four hours) and they specifically tested me for over 21 different allergens, including cats and dogs. My test for cats was positive, and the test for dogs negative.
