What are some suggestions for things to do in New York in Dec?

Asked by lukiarobecheck (1526points) October 5th, 2009

This will be my first time in the Big Apple, and I am looking to do it up. Now I am going to try and do a lot of the touristy stuff, but I am looking for some great insider information on places to go. I love live music, and great food. I am staying at the New Yorker Hotel so I will be around Midtown, I guess?
I have heard of some bars that sounds cool. PDT, and Death & Co. If any one has any suggestions for me as to bars and other cool stuff, in the Midtown area, I would appreciate it.
I live in Austin, so if anyone wants to swap info, I can let you know some cool things to do it Austin.

You could check if there are any concerts you want to see while you’re there, there are always bands playing New York. And try to see a broadway show! Even if you’re not a “theatre person” there are very modern and hilarious shows like Avenue Q or Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (the latter I recommend to everyone) and cheap tickets on standby.

Also, Central Park is adorable in the winter. I like to just wander around and buy hot chocolates… bars annoy me in the winter because I don’t like to hold my coat, haha.

Go see the giant Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.

The obvious answer is to try and get tickets for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes.

Didn’t Avenue Q close?

@poofandmook Ooh… maybe. Must admit I haven’t been keeping up!

Manhattan is so small that you don’t need to limit yourself to the midtown area. If you don’t mind taking cabs (there’s a shit ton of them, often you can flag one down in one minute or less) you can go anywhere in the city for probably ten dollars or less. I left there fifteen years ago though, not sure how much fares have gone up.
