What should I do with these iPods?

Asked by MissAusten (16157points) October 6th, 2009

A few weeks ago, my sister-in-law gave me her iPod Nano when she got a new iTouch. I think it’s a 3rd generation. It works just fine.

My husband, not knowing about the iPod his sister gave me because he’s been out of town, bought me a new iPod Nano as an anniversary gift. My original plan was to exchange the one he bought for some new earphones and one of those FM transmitters so I can listen to it in the car. However, the new iPod seems way cooler and now I am sorely tempted to keep it. Tomorrow is my birthday, and my husband said he’d get me the accessories I want if I decide to keep the new iPod. Right now I’m torn between wanting to be practical and wanting that iPod.

Also, my husband bought the iPod in the middle of August, which means I’m past the 45 day return policy of Best Buy. I may not be able to exchange the iPod if that’s what I decide to do.

What do you do with an unwanted, used, iPod? Is there a big difference between the older iPod Nano and the newer one?

Find a laser printer facility that etches laser prints on metal. Find a designer willing to draw some very witty artwork on the iPod back. Sell on eBay for a heavy premium. Rince and repeat.

Use it as a back up?

Well, the new Nano should have a camera on it, if it’s the one that JUST came out. that’s pretty cool.

I know people who have multiple ipods – one in different rooms, one in the car or purse all the time, etc.

do you have a lot of music in your collection?

@eponymoushipster No, I don’t really have a lot of music. I do have cds that I can transfer over. I also had an iPod shuffle that my mom gave me for Christmas a few years ago. I gave that one to my daughter. I’m sure she’d be happy with the Nano, but she’s only ten and has a propensity for losing things.

The camera on the new Nano is one of the reasons I thought I might keep it. I didn’t know it had that feature until I was browsing the Best Buy website, looking for their exchange policy information.

keep the cool one, sell the other one on ebay or pass it on to another family member since you didn’t pay for it

@MissAusten i’d definitely keep the camera’d nano. if you convert your CDs, how much music will you have?

@eponymoushipster If I convert my cd’s, I’ll have quite a bit of music. I think the newer Nano can also record videos, which would be great since my camera doesn’t and our video camera isn’t digital. It would be nice to upload videos for my parents and brother to see, since they live so far away.

@JONESGH Everyone I know already has an iPod better/newer than the older Nano! I’m so behind the times.

I actually just found an organization that takes donated cell phones and iPods and gives the proceeds to the charity of your choice. I’m going to donate the older iPod to benefit Relay for Life.

Sounds like you already know the answer :)

@MissAusten then i’d start ripping those discs! maybe save the ipod that does video for video, and use the others for your music.

to me, the nano with video is in some ways a competitor to the Flip video cameras.

You could always send it to me.

mine got stolen a couple months back

agree with @eponymoushipster keep the video one. it’s way cool. sell the other one or pass it on. Or, use it as your “use and abuse I don’t care if you get scratched or dropped while i’m working out” iPod and to help keep the new one beautiful.

If I was in your shoes, I would try to exchange the new one for the car transmitter, and if they wouldn’t take it back, I would probably give the old one to a friend or relative who didn’t have an ipod.

Ohh, better idea: I’m pretty sure the people at the iPod store told me they’ll give you a 10% discount on your next purchase if you trade in an old iPod. You could trade it in to buy accessories.

Well, I had some time today so I went to Best Buy and picked up the accessories I wanted. Finally found some earbuds that will stay in my ears!

I had planned to donate the older iPod, but my husband called today and said he cracked the screen on his iPod. He’s in luck since I now have an extra!

Driving and listening to my iPod in the car was lovely. :)

I have 4 ipods and the thought of getting rid of one of them makes me cry.
