Has anyone had experience with outdoor deck/porch carpet?

Asked by Val123 (12734points) October 7th, 2009

I’m not talking about the plastic green AstroTurf. I mean the stuff that looks rather like Berber carpet, only it’s for use outside. Does it hold up under the mud and the rain and the snow, etc.?

Great question! I don’t have the answer for you but I’m wondering the same thing. I want to purchase some for my deck but I’m afraid it will get musty smelling and gross after a couple rains.

@ItalianPrincess1217 That’s my concern too. I really like that stuff they display under patio tables and stuff at Walmart, but I wonder how it really holds up…....with all the stuff they can do with plastic, you’d think they could come up with something really durable.

We put in new carpet last year. It gets a significant amount of rain and snow, but seems to be holding up well. It is always pretty wet for about a day or two after a hard rain, and it may have faded a little from last year (constant sun exposure), but I’m pretty satisfied. I think it was from Home Depot.

@limegwri Is it in direct sun, or is it shaded? Our deck is covered, but rain flies in from the side…Can you find an example of what you have online and post it?
Thanks so much for the response!

@Val123 This question didn’t take off the way I’d hoped. How will we ever know the truth about outdoor rugs now? sigh :(

@ItalianPrincess1217 Sniffling too! Especially since, from what I saw, you’re talking about a couple hundred dollars for the stuff. Expensive experiment. :(

Well I’ve seen some outdoor carpet at the home depot. It’s on the rollers (along with the rest of the regular indoor carpets). If I remember correctly they are fairly cheap if you’re only covering a small area. I think they are something like .75 cents a square ft. I tried to find it on their website but was unsuccessful. Do you have a home depot near you? I would just go talk to one of the workers that know a thing or two about it. They’ll be able to tell you whether it holds up good or not. Good luck:) And let me know how it turns out if you get any.
