Should I avoid hair conditioner?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) October 17th, 2009

I’ve noticed that when I use conditioner, more of my hair falls out during my shower. Should I stop using conditioner then? Does conditioner have anything in it that my hair needs? (I use Pantene Pro-V). Has anybody ever had this happen to them, or noticed it as well?

Don’t use a conditioner with so many synthetic chemicals. If you don’t want to pay the price for a natural or organic one, Suave is cheap and works well.

There was a report nearly twelve years ago that indicated that conditioners contribute to baldness and hair loss in men. Ok for women though. The basis for this was that in men the scalp oils contain testosterone and that the dry hair absorbs it. If the hair is conditioned (moisturised with oils) the hair cannot absorb the scalp oil and the excess testosterone damages the hair follicle. This was discovered during placebo tests for anti-baldness products where the placebo was a conditioner.

The final result was that using a “baby” shampoos and massaging the scalp led to nearly as much recovery as the various hair re-growth products. Although things like ReGain were approved, sixty percent of the placebos in tests that did not uses conditioners had as much re-growth success.

I don’t know the actual answer to this question, but note that when you have longer hair-the more its going to fall out just from washing/brushing.

Other things like stress and eating habits can effect this too.

The healthy way to use conditioner is from the nape of your neck down. You should only condition the top of your head a couple times a month. This may solve your problem.

I agree with @Facade and @RedPowerLady. My best friend is a hairdresser and she is always telling me to avoid fashionable conditioners (ie: Pantene) that, basically, just coat the hair in plastic (I don’t know if it’s real plastic but that’s her favourite saying when it comes to the likes of Pantene and Loreal!). Usually really cheap, own brand conditioners have less crap in them and so I often use these on the ends of my hair and every few months I will buy an expensive conditioner to give my hair a treatment.

How long is your hair and do you fin it falls out in clumps or that the ends break off easier?

@Leanne1986 It’s plastic. Silicones—the plastic trick people into believe their hair is healthy when it isn’t.—

@Facade Well, I certainly don’t want that coating my hair!!

@Leanne1986, My hair is about 2–3 inches past my shoulders, and my hair doesn’t come out in clumps, i just noticed that more hair is in the drain. =\

ErikaVT’s answer is good. It might not be the conditioner at all so you should stop using it so you can find out if it really is it that is causing the problem.
Leanne1986 is right too. Pantene coats your hair so that it ‘looks’ good. It doesn’t actually fix your hair. A good conditioner will fill in the gaps in the hair cuticle so that your hair is physically better.
If you need more advice on a good conditioner talk to your hairdresser and they can advise you on what is the best type for your hair.
