My mom, sister and I have been itching our heads for about 3-4 days but can't find lice.

Asked by sarah826 (449points) October 19th, 2009

It started with my sister about 4 days ago. We just brushed it off as her being strange. But then that night my mom started itching. And then yesterday morning I was itchy for a few hours and then it stopped, but now I’m itching again. Now we’re all itchy. We haven’t switched shampoos or anything like that lately, and it’s not like it’s allergy season. My mom has looked like crazy through our hair for lice but she can’t find anything. Any ideas? (oh btw I’m 13, my sis is 9, and my mom is totc)

Do you have any pets, or been around anybody with pets recently?

It could be where you live. Much of the US is under enjoying great weather due to a very high pressure system. The drawback is that it is very dry air. It could be dry skin under your hair.

My guess would also be dry skin.

What have you all been eating lately?

I know you said you haven’t switched shampoos, but did you open a new bottle of your shampoo? Maybe there is a new ingredient? Interestingly my scalp has been itching also, but I had switched shampoos, because I am using up little shampoos from hotels, so I am not sure what the heck is going on. I don;t tink it is dry skin, because I am 41 years old and have never been itchy like this from being dry. I seem to be itchier on my left than my right also. It’s weird.

well we have 1 dog but we’ve had him for as long as I can remember. we haven’t been around any new animals. We haven’t been eating special food. I have noticed that I’ve been extra dry, but the rest of us haven’t. I don’t know…

You said your mom has looked for lice, but has she looked for nits? The actual lice are active and usually hard to spot. The nits lice eggs are stationary, attached to the base of individual hairs, and are pretty easy to see with a magnifying glass once you know what you’re looking for scroll about half way down the page to get to the photos of nits

If your mom is getting older she may not be able to see as well a she used to.

My daughter and I get itchy scalp around this time of the year. I live in the Northeast where our season’s are drastically different, and during the fall, our dry skin flares up. We use a brand of Tea Tree Mint Shampoo that works great at getting rid of and preventing dry scalp. Ever since we switched, we do not have itchy heads any more.

I live in the mid-eastern part of MN by the way

Do you have hard water where you are? That could stop the shampoo from completely washing out.
If I were you, just go ahead and get the ragweed lice shampoo. Use it, and use conditioner.

nope we don’t have hard water. We haven’t had hard water since I was tiny.
