Why do I get these sudden headaches?

Asked by RocketSquid (3483points) November 20th, 2009

Every so often, I’ll get a headache out of the blue. No warning, no build up, just BAM! headache. They’re usually not too severe, and a good nap takes care of it pretty well if it doesn’t go away on it’s own.

I did give up caffeine a little over a week ago, but haven’t had the serious side effects other than cravings. I’ve had the headaches before I quit, but they were less common.

You gave up all caffiene? Coffee, Soft Drinks, chocolate?

@JLeslie Not technically all caffeine, mostly just soft drinks. I don’t drink coffee, but I do eat chocolate when it’s available. My biggest problem was Mountain Dew.

Well, Mountain Dew is a big deal; lot sof caffeine in that soda. I went off caffiene over 10 years ago and it took me a month to not fall asleep everywhere. My headaches lasted for just a few days. I cheat every do often, and even just a can of soda I will have reprocussions the next night. Maybe not a bad headache, but I’ll feel like s**t. Almost like I am coming down with something. I do eat some chocolate and a hot chocolate every so often, which seems to be not a big deal, because I guess the caffiene is so minimal. What I did find when I quit drinking soda was that I started craving a lot more candy, desserts and chocolate—watch out for that.

I think give it another couple of week without caffiene. If the headaches don’t stop then I think you can rule out caffiene related.

@RocketSquid Giving up the caffeine can cause random headaches.

So can many many other things. Light sensitivity, changing temperatures too quickly, not getting enough sleep, eating trigger foods, having poor eyesight, tension pain in the neck and shoulders, stress, etc…
