What are the symptoms of pneumonia and how can this affect a pregnancy?

Asked by redneckgirl (79points) December 13th, 2009

I have been coughing and have been real tired lately and I’m wondering if it’s possible that I may have phnemonia.

I’m also 4 months pregnant and I’m worried that if I have it,that it will make my baby real sick.

Pneumonia is very serious (inflammation of one or both lungs) and should never be taken lightly. Why not go immediately to your Ob/gyn tomorrow, have him listen to your lungs and do some blood work? Don’t waste time with us.

You want to do everything you can to keep your immune system strong; any illness that a pregnant woman may harbor is a Bad thing for the fetus.

As gailcalled said… as far as the symptoms… along with stuffy / runny nose , sore throat etc…

IF you even SUSPECT that you have any such ailment ; get yourself to your doctor ASAP ; as you could be playing with your child’s LIFE….

I would call your primary care physician. It’s best to see them and not risk going into an OB office, infecting healthy pregnant women. Plus, they are better to deal with things like this, and can always keep touch with your OB to know what is and isn’t safe if they have any questions.

Pneumonia is a secondary infection, not a primary one. You start off with some other illness, like a bad cold or bronchitis, something that builds up fluids in your lungs, then bacteria set in and pneumonia develops. Since you’re preggers, I say go see the doctor. If you weren’t I’d say it sounds like you have a cold, so get as much rest as you can.
