What does it mean when a cat licks you?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) December 14th, 2009

Dogs give kisses by licking, cats say they love you by blinking for a long period of time, while facing you (or so I’ve heard). What does it mean when a kitty licks you?

It either wants attention or just likes the taste of your skin…one or the other.

Stand back. It’s hungry. Also: Cover your eyeballs. They like chewy things.

Cats actually say I love you by nibbling very quickly, just sayin’

g’day Samantha Rae,

Thank you for your questiion.

The first thing a mother cat does to her kitten is lick it and wash it. Grooming is a sign of acceptance. link

Could be they are checking out how you’d taste if you fail to come through with adequate supplies of cat food. :-)

No, seriously, it can mean they like the saltiness of your hand or they are showing you affection or they are grooming you. You have to read the rest of their body language to fully decode the behavior.,

It means you’re salty, and that the kitty might have been weaned a little too early.

It means you’re lovely and salty, like potato chips!

I used to wake up to my cat purring like mad and grooming my eyebrows or the baby hairs at my hairline. She loves me.

XOXMSperfect's avatar

It means “U haz flavur”

@SeventhSense I think that’s how it works in Soviet Russia.

They love you, and what to groom you : )

Depends where.

jerv's avatar

It depends.

One cat I had would lick my hand if I had had a cigarette recently (and grab my wrist to do so if I didn’t give her her nicotine fix)

Another had OCD and thought I was another cat since I was practically the first living thing she ever saw.

Normally though, cats only groom either themselves or those that they really like so it can mean something along the lines of “You are my best friend”.

Time to go wash yourself.

I have to cover my mouth whenever he starts rubbing his head on my face and licks me.

I swear the fool cat is trying to kiss me.

(My wife looks disgusted whenever she sees the cat doing this.)

UScitizen's avatar

You have salt on your skin.

SABOTEUR's avatar

@UScitizen: Ohhhhhhhh!
I thought that salt thing was a joke.
How about that…!

strange1's avatar

you have a fetish for smearing cat food on yourself

jamcanfi74's avatar

I think it is a way of the cat saying that you don’t meet his/her ideal of clean so they will fix the problem. Maybe it meas that the cat loves you and that is how they are showing love you.
