For toe surgery (cheilectomy) should I go to a podiatrist or an orthopedic surgeon?

Asked by jeanm (279points) January 3rd, 2007
My podiatrist is very experienced with this surgery and generally well respected. I grew up thinking orthopedic docs were better. Now there are "sports" medicine doctors.

Ask him how many times he has done the surgery. If over several hundred w. good results, that is helpful info. Is this considered (you should forgive the expression) "garden-variety" surgery? Or something unusual?
