What gives with my feet?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) December 25th, 2009

When i was in my 20s, i wore a size 11½ mens shoe. now, in my 60s, i wear a size 14! what the heck happened? i weighed 175 lbs, back then, i weigh 235 lbs. today. surely gaining a little weight did not make my feet grow this much…......or did it?

My feet are about ½ size larger now than they were when I was younger. But that seems a bit odd that your feet have “grown” that much even with your weight gain. They’re probably mostly just wider and maybe you don’t really need that size .. maybe only a bit larger shoe and a bigger width shoe.

It is totally possible that your weight gain of 60 lbs has caused the tarsal bones in your feet to spread, accounting for longer feet, thus a bigger shoe size. Most women, including myself, see a slight shoe size increase during pregnancy for this same reason. In some cases, (like mine) if you walk a lot during the pregnancy, the muscles and ligaments stretch out permanently as well.

Do you walk a lot?

Get down to the chemist and get yourself a large pumice stone.

Thanks for the pumice stone answer. it made me laugh. maybe, there is something to the saying “flatfoot”, referring to a police officer. think so?

The weight gain may have something to do with it. Did you do a lot of foot patrol work? After 29 years in the Army (Combat Engineers) I still wear the same boot size (11) as when I was 20, of course I’ve only gained 12 pounds over those years.

A lady goes into a bar and sees a cowboy with his feet propped up on a table. He has the biggest feet she’s ever seen. The woman asks the cowboy if what they say about men with big feet is true. The cowboy replies, “Sure is, why don’t you come back to my place and let me prove it?” The woman is curious, so she spends the night with him. When she sees him the next day, she hands the cowboy a $100 bill. “I’m flattered,” he says, blushing. “Nobody has ever paid me for my prowess before.” “Well, don’t be,” the woman replies. “Take this money and go buy yourself some boots that fit!”

I dont get it either really, but it must be a weight thing. When i was in middle school i wore a size 13–14 sneaker, now im 22 i wear a size 12.

Just to be on the safe side, have a doctor check you out for diabetes.

The feet do spread a little bit as one ages, but 2½ sizes! That’s a lot! I’d see my GP or podiatrist for sure.

My sister swears that her feet grew 2½ sizes during her pregnancy. So, it could be worse – it could have happened in only 9 months!

i think it’s just normal how feet are still growing as you get older, my sister-in-law was a size 7 then as she got to her 40s she went up a size. Hmmm
