Have you ever been close to death?

Asked by Theby (998points) December 28th, 2009

I once almost drowned and if it hadn’t of been for my dad grabbing my long hair I most certainly would have drowned. I am sure a fair few of us have had similar experiences. What was yours? Be it a dangerous operation, a car accident, or a childhood dare.

I got waaaaay too drunk one September weekend freshman year of college. I went to the ER, and my blood pressure was “dangerously low.” If someone hadn’t found me it might not have ended well. I’m glad I don’t remember it.

I’ve had a few interesting car wrecks among other things that hammered home the lesson that life is too short :)

I was riding my bike along the sidewalk with my friend years ago and I accidentally slipped off the curb. As I did this a city bus went right beside me, anymore to the left and I would have been toast.

Kelly_Obrien's avatar

I was run over by a car when I was 8.

My first marriage was death.

I suppose so. I only know from personal experience that I was VERY sick. I’ve never before or after been so sick. I had an acute appendicitis, and by the time I got to a hospital and they got me into the OR, my appendix had perforated. They were able to clean me out and a strong regimen of antibiotics saved me from blood poisoning, but it was touch and go for a time.

I was in a bad car crash a few months ago. It sure felt like a near death experience. It has changed the way I live life and the way I drive.

The only other near death experience I had was when a crazy guy I was dating tried to strangle and suffocate me. Luckily I got out of the situation alive. This has also changed the way I live life and made me more aware of warning signs in men.

About 18 months I ended up in the ER with a temp of about 92 degrees F. Apparently, organs start to shut down at around 86. So I was halfway there. The nurse in the ER took my temp and I was instantly rushed in to a team of doctors that were waiting. I was in the hospital for three days. I never got a good explanation of what happened.

That and a near miss going 70 down a freeway and missing a parked construction truck are probably me two closest.

SABOTEUR's avatar

Yeah…the ambulance driver said I lost a lot of blood (see explanation).

98.6 degrees is normal. 92 degrees is below normal.

102 degrees would be bad, while 104 degrees would be murder.

Yes, a close call in a car accident.

Same as you, @Theby . I almost drowned when I was 8. My biological father took me swimming. He left me in the big pool and went to chat to his friends in the middle of the pool. I landed infront of one of the water vents and it pushed me away from the side. Luckily a girl saw me going down while trying to swim to the side and saved me. I was very lucky that day. To this day he doesn’t know I almost drowned. He didn’t pay attention.

yes my brother had a seizure while driving a car to a busy intersection whose light was conveniently turning red….needless to say luckily we were driving a stick I was the passenger and was able to get his foot off the accelerator and shift it to nuetral and get us off the road….scary stuff….oh yeah and the owner of the car was in the back with her boyfriend screamin like a banshee

Complications from my tonsillectomy caused a bleeder and when my parents were putting me to bed I threw up 2 quarts of blood…by the time my parents got me back to the hospital I was in serious shape…got last rites…saw the light…woke up the next morning like WTF just happened??

Had I fallen asleep instead of throwing up…I would have bled to death in my sleep that night.

When my daughter was being born(1983), I had the bad luck to deliver at shift change. The placenta was retained, but nobody checked on me to make sure the uterus was contracting; when a tech showed up & took blood I passed out. The next thing I knew, I was in Trendelenburg position, I had an IV in my hand, & nurses were stuffing my legs into support hose. (The nurse coming on shift was also chewing out the nurse who was going off.)
In January 2000, I was taking dogs out w/DH. The road was a glacier; I was running when our (then)6 month old Lab came running toward me. She hit my knee, & I hit the ice. When my husband reached me, I was unconscious & not breathing, my mouth full of blood. He got me breathing again but couldn’t get me up to the house, as it was too slippery, so he went back up to get the car. While he was doing that (& sending the aforementioned daughter to stay w/me), I came to & started trying to crawl back. We went to the ER, where the Dr listed all the criteria for diagnosing concussion as proof I didn’t have one; by that time I was with-it enough to know that I did, in fact, have it. Also a split upper lip, split on my nose, wrenched neck, torn knee cartilage…

I was 7 and had pneumonia. My mom just thought I had the flu, and didn’t do anything about it. She rarely took us to the doctor… we didn’t have insurance and my mom is generally resistant to doctors. She didn’t react to my sickness until I was too weak to walk, pick up a cup of juice, and hold my bowels. I just remember wanting it all to end. She finally scooped me up and took me to the doctor’s office, where they told her I needed to go to the emergency room immediately and that I wouldn’t make it if she didn’t. So, we went and I survived.

All my experiences with death have been wishing for it and almost bringing myself there.

When I was 6 weeks old, I aspirated milk into my right lung after a feeding by my mother and I almost choked to death. One of our neighbors was a nurse who performed child CPR on me and she saved my life that night in my parents home.

I came down with hepatitis in 1980. And although I was never really close to death, I wanted to die. I’ve never approached that level of sickness in my life since. Anyone who has had this knows what I’m talking about.

At birth.

A couple weeks ago I was trying to swallow a large pill I cut in half. It got stuck under my epiglottis for maybe 20 seconds. Somehow it worked it’s way back into my mouth. Scared the shit out of me. I hate swallowing pills. I probably won’t be swallowing any more pills that aren’t small.

This past spring. I went in for routine surgery but didn’t do well in the recovery room. I have a bit of an attitude and apparently yelled at the nurse. Instead of dealing with me she pumped me full of painkillers. Too many. I couldn’t wake up but they wanted to close so they took me to the bathroom to change back into my clothes and told me I had peed (I hadn’t). My Mom took me home. I slept for about 24 hours and woke up in extreme pain. The ER here in town told me I had a UTI and pumped me full of more higher strength painkillers. When I could no longer talk or stay awake, my Mom took me to the ER in the hospital where I’d had the surgery. Turns out my bladder and kidneys had failed from all of the pain meds and urine was leaching into my system. If I hadn’t gotten there when I did I would’ve died. I was in the hospital for a while trying to recover (and I still don’t pee right and I’m still peed off about it!).

I was on a sailboat cleaning it when the mast fell over, missing my head by centimeters.

I lived after being shot in the stomach and if the bullet had been just a little bit over the doctors said I would have lost my life. It was touch and go but I made it thru it.
Years later I was in a car reck and almost lost my life. My car was a total loss and I still dont know how they got me out of it.
Then I had a man that choked me and put a pillow over my face and I think he would have killed me if it hadnt have been for my very young daughter at the time coming in and yelling at him. I am forever grateful for her helping me that night but sad that she has to live with that image.

There is nothing like being in a hospital bed and hear the doctor tell the nurse…
“If he’s still here in the morning, we’ll operate”
