Ran out of medical tape. How can I secure this transdermal nicotine patch in place?

Asked by Grisaille (12048points) January 4th, 2010

I’ve tried to quit smoking many times – I use nicotine patches to curve the cravings, and they work well.

Issue I have is that they always fall off, especially when I’m sleeping (though that can be due to me tossing and turning due to the crazy ass dreams these things give me).

Yes, the surface area is always clean, and I am applying them to hairless areas not located near joints.

I generally use medical tape to keep them stuck on the area, but have ran out. Is there any non-irritable tape or item I can use to fasten it in place until I run out to get some tomorrow? I really don’t want to crack, here.

You could lightly wrap gauze around. A rubber band (or two) if it’s on the inside of the wrist. Place it on the inside of your waistline so the elastic of your underwear can help hold it in place for tonight.

I had so much trouble with the patch. The only place it would stick was my upper arm, and even then only for about two hours. The gum works a lot better for me.

It’s such a pain in the ass.

I’ll try the gauze (or better yet, an ACE bandage). It’s on my upper arm. Thanks.

Other suggestions welcome.

Just make sure you’re not wrapping too tight- that way lies danger, Will Robinson.

Like I said in chat…if you wear the patch while sleeping try putting it on your foot (even the sole) and put a sock over it. Problem solved.

My socks manage to slip off me in the middle of the night. I don’t know how, but they do. I always end up with one loose sock on when I wake up.

Wow, you really are restless sleeper. I always sleep with my socks on and they never come off.

You could try masking tape or painters tape in a pinch.

I’ve used masking tape to keep gauze in place before and it’s not irritating.

Just don’t try Duct tape or you may have it on for life :)

Good for you for quitting. Lurve for that. Fluther wants you around for as long as possible.

Also, @gemiwing, the reason I don’t want to put it on my waist area is because I have a tattoo there. Might just end up putting it on my foot, like @Dr_C suggested.

@Buttonstc If all else fails, I’m crazy gluing this summabitch. I will beat this! :P

And thank you.

Contrary to what @Buttonstc says, duct tape does not stay on for life.

Use duct tape. It’s the handy man’s secret weapon for cryin’ out loud!

Grisaille's avatar

The adhesive used in duct tape is quite irritating on open skin if kept on too long.

I’ve tried.

Hmm… I’ve never had problems. I use it to remove warts. It works better than the store-bought stuff.

Gum makes a pretty good adhesive so chew a little Nicorette and use that.

Grisaille's avatar

@AstroChuck I wish I could quit you.

Don’t we all. groan…

@Grisaille- Truth is, sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.

I’m with @Sampson on the duct tape.
I use it for lots of things, almost everyday.
You sound like you need that super sticking power.
Good luck with quitting smoking.

Gris, when it comes to that sock thing, I suggest referencing this question.

…Washing machine gene, you say…

FWIW, I stopped using the patch. Don’t need it. Cold turkey.
