Why won't my computer let me burn cds anymore?

Asked by sjmc1989 (5499points) January 8th, 2010

I am trying to burn a cd off of iTunes, but when I go to burn the cd it flashes “disc burner or software not found.” I have always burnt cd with no problem. Does anyone know what might be causing this and how to fix it?

Edit: I know I’m not using the best grammer, but cut me some slack I was hurrying :)

Try reinstalling iTunes. Or, you can download the free ImagBurn

the lens for the disc burner could be broken.

Couple years ago my old laptop had an unfortunate fall and the lens used for reading/burning CD’s was broken and no longer could recognize CD’s. However the lens for DVD’s still was intact.

So that could be something to think about…broken/damaged/worn out lens.

are you on a Mac or a pc?

The disc burning software you have installed may not be compatible with iTunes. Try burning a CD with the software you usually use. If it still works, it’s iTunes, and you need to research that on the iTunes support site.

Ack! Not Nero! It used to be great, but has metastasized into a cancerous growth,

If you are on a Mac go to the Apple, select about this Mac then “more info” then “Disc burning”. If that isn’t there or it is and nothing shows up your drive isn’t registering with your computer.

If you are on a PC I believe you right click on “my computer” and select something similar. It calls up something that gives you a tree outline of your computer hardware. Again if your computer isn’t seeing your drive it will show (or not show up) here.

This is only helpful to rule out whether or not it’s a hardware problem as your error message indicates it may be.

Mine isn’t working either, I have a two-year-old Mac. Is yours a Mac too?

Sounds like something may have gotten corrupted sweets.
Try reinstalling.

I am so sorry everyone as soon as I posted this question my internet connection went out and then I had a series of unfortunate events. Thank you so much for trying to help!

@Naked_Homer I have a HP laptop and I appreciate your advice. Really!

@SeventhSense If I reinstall iTunes will I still have all of my music?

About a week ago I tried watching a DVD on my laptop and it wouldn’t play. I thought it was just my Quickplayer acting up again and didn’t think much about it. then on Friday I tried burning a cd through iTunes and I have burnt 1,000 of cd’s using iTunes before and never had a problem with it.

Also, it might be completely unrelated, but all of my icons on the righ bottom of my screen on the bottom bar are disappearing. This has also never happened before! —I don’t know a lot about computers so if you can use simple computer terms it would help me out greatly and again Thank you all so far!

@sjmc1989
You might just need an update. Check with Apple support before you do anything.

@sjmc1989 – I am so sorry to hear about your difficulties across the board! No apologies needed I assure you!

It sounds like there is more that is wrong than just disc burning. Incidentally, yes, if you reinstall iTunes you will still have all your music. What I would do is back up the data base first, then access it again with the reinstalled program. That way you wont lose all your tweeked info.

But it sounds like more is gone astray than just that.

@Naked_Homer I think your right I don’t think it is just something wrong wtih my iTunes. I think that something with my disk drive, and I would do what you said, but I have no idea what that mean. I don’t know how to back up the data base, or reinstall. :( I looked on my computer and the only thing I see under the (D:) drive is something called HP Recovery (D:) and of course I have no idea what this means??

And now I can’t get my cd tray to open.

sjmc1989's avatar

Instead of posting another question I am going to see if someone can help me on this thread. I have found out that my real problem is that my dvd/cd drive has completely disappeared. It is not on my computer it won’t recognize anything, it is like it does not even exist. Does anyone know how to fix this? Why this would be happening? I can use all of the help I can get! I am really frustrated with this situation and have tried everything!

SeventhSense's avatar

LOL Are you sure you’re not blond? How does your DVD drive disappear?
Maybe you used the CD tray as a cupholder? :)

sjmc1989's avatar

@SeventhSense Hey Mister I am a smart girl! It is disappearing when I click on My Computer. It doesn’t even have the drive listed on there. You are such an ass :)

SeventhSense's avatar

some coffee cups are just too heavy :P

sjmc1989's avatar

I don’t think it was the coffee cup that did it, I just don’t think it is great for storing snacks. Who would have thought?!

SeventhSense's avatar

@sjmc1989
was it a removable drive?

sjmc1989's avatar

Wait are we being serious now?

sjmc1989's avatar

No it is not removable drive. Sometimes when I shut down my laptop and start it up again, the drive will appear again, but it doesn’t work longer than a few minutes.
