Sustainable Development Grad School programs?

Asked by Jonathan_hodgkins (684points) January 23rd, 2010

I’m trying to find a grad school program focused on international community development, that focuses on administration and possibly some mechanical engineering for the developing world.
Any thoughts?

According to wikipedia The Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at Cornell University” and the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan are both working with the United Nations to help meet some of their goals. See the article for a listing of more suggestions.

Administration and mechanical engineering are two totally different subjects. Which is it that you want to focus on?

Why do you want to apply mechanical engineering to developing countries, and what specifically do you mean by that? Mechanical engineering is a very broad field, typically only applicable to developing countries in the simplest of forms. What are you trying to accomplish?

Civil engineering is probably more applicable to your goals. Most people that want to “help” the developing world find that providing basic infrastructure – sewer and potable water systems – are the most needed.

Franky a degree in “Sustainable Development” sounds like a bunch of fluff. You probably don’t need a graduate degree to help the “developing world” – just fly to a country and start asking around… What exactly are your goals?

I’ve had a lecture once from a mechanical engineer who was involved with the red cross as a volunteer in a rapid response team. They go out to devistated areas (by natural disaster etc) and admin the situation. As Im sur e you can imagine it s quite a massive task putting together releif camps which can house 10,000’s + refugees each and sprout in a day or two. They generally secure clean water (source, treatment, distribution), sanitation (collection, treatment etc), find suitable places for air field landing strip, hospitals, etc etc Its all really intersting stuff.

This lecturer didnt do any admin or development learning though – generally his engineering expertise is what was helpful in the situation.
