Where can I get FREE training in audio engineering?

Asked by pikipupiba (1629points) February 17th, 2010

I’m looking for online info and training courses in the art of audio engineering. Emphasis on the free part… hehehe

(I can’t find anything obviously helpful on Google)

@ShiningToast You’ve read The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, haven’t you?

@pikipupiba TINSTAAFL means – There is no such thing as a free lunch.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities I have not, but I may have to. My economics professor drilled it into our heads.

@pikipupiba Do you have any training, experience, education or a proven aptitude in audio engineering or anything even remotely related to audio engineering? If you do, you might be able to talk your way into some kind of entry level position, gopher, phone answerer, etc. at a local radio station or small recording studio somewhere.

Depending on your experience, either volunteer somewhere or get a job.

Also, you should be able get some basic training at your local cable company’s public access studios. There is certainly a degree of audio engineering involved in television production. Here’s a link to an FAQ about public access TV for Comcast, I think, but all cable providers are required, by law, to provide public access to the local community. That will give you at least some training and experience to get you one step further if you have no training at all.

@lillycoyote Thank you! All of these are wonderful ideas! Much lurve to you!

O.K., I admit I am well into my overkill mode, be compassionate, forgiving and patient with me for bombarding you with all this, but I have taken a special interest in your “case” mostly because I am supposed to be doing something that I actually need to and should do, but if I’m good at nothing else, I am a master of avoidance behaviour. I googled “audio engineering” online tutorials and came up with these links. Don’t know if they’re helpful and it’s only a handful, but if you want, check out the search criteria and the links. At least some of these sources will probably give you the ability to speak the language of audio engineering, at least enough to bluff your way into an entry level position if you are charming enough, bold enough and determined enough. After this I’m done, thank god. I will now stop answering this question and again wish you the best of luck. :)

@lillycoyote If I could give you a billion lurve I would (no THAT would be an exclusive club)! You truly are what makes fluther so great!

@pikipupiba Thank you sweetie! Not everyone is so kind and appreciative when I get into one of my overkill, bomb you with info and links mode. I’m not always sure when enough is enough or when it becomes patronizing to bomb people with information and links they may already be aware of. I’m adding you to my fluther just because you’re a sweetheart.

You know…one way to give extra lurve to someone who has really gone over the top for you is to go find some of that person’s other responses and give it. Just as long as you remember that you’re going to max out on lurve to that person at the same level, whether now or later.
