Common sense. By a long shot. Common sense is something that school can’t teach you.

i think you need to have a good balance of both.

Common sense

common sense is a type of intelligence or a “dimension of intelligence,” as it is sometimes called, so the question doesn’t really make much sense. It’d be like asking: which is better, icecream or vanilla?

I think common sense is more important. You can have all the “book learning” in the world, but if you don’t have the common sense to stay out of a bad neighborhood at night or look both ways before you cross the street, you’ll be dead from stupid.

… coming from the guy who can’t spell “intelligence”, among other simple words.

I know MANY people that are very “book smart” and are dumb as a box of rocks in common life situations. They can get a degree and a job cutting people open, but can hardly function in daily life. I think common sense comes from your parents and upbringing, and can’t really be taught. It has to be observed and absorbed. Dumb perents often make kids with the same deficiencies. Not always though. Look at what Hollywood has sometimes produced. Beautiful people that can’t fix a flat tire or put together an entertainment center are put on a pedestal. Paris Hilton seems to me, from the obviously one sided media image I see, to have almost no common sense. She is famous for being rich, and sets an awefull example for young people. Train wreck there. Anyway, intelligence IS important, but common sense is a necessity. You need a good mix of the two, not one without the other. I am obviously missing the gene that tells me not to ramble, so I can’t talk.

Intelligence equates to knowledge, common sense is having wisdom. Knowledge, without the wisdom of knowing how to use, it is pretty useless.
