What's the best way to clean a dirty cast iron stove top?

I’ve scrubbed with many different cleaning agents to no avail.

Describe the nature of the dirt. (Not rust?)

Did you try Barkeeper’s Friend? Powder?

Kosher salt and scrub? Agreed with susanc—what’s the nature of the beast?

I would try oven cleaner.

Try some oil, something like WD40 or any spray oil you would use on hinges etc.

Just regular dirt from cooking. Haven’t tried anything yet…I heard ammonia works?!?

@jeremylittle In that case, the best thing is scraping with a brush, pouring boiling water on it if you need to, then reseasoning with oil applied to paper towel, with low heat for a few minutes.
