How do you resolve your most stressful little daily annoyance at work?

Asked by prolificus (6583points) April 21st, 2010

For me, it’s the red flashing light on my work Blackberry. The handy little device is a useful tool, but it also feels like Big Brother is keeping tabs on me. I resolve the tension I feel seeing the flashing red light by staying a step ahead of the communication (e.g. check in with boss before boss checks in with me, etc.). Also, I keep the ringer on mute most of the time unless I’m travelling. When I’m off the clock, I tuck the old ball-and-chain away in my satchel.

What’s your most stressful little daily annoyance and how do you deal with it?

Can you just cover up the light? haha. Then check it regularly.

Mine is a person. I work in social work. I work in a low income housing facility. My job is to make residents happy. Which I love. Well some of the residents are overbearing and will come down a million times a day. That is fine except the one(s) that come down just to give unwarranted advice and don’t stop until you agree with them. Sigh. I have just come to laugh it off. Seriously it helps. I also get surprisingly distracted and busy at that time so that when they realize they don’t have a captive audience they wander away. I am of course attentive when there is an actual need (however small).

Waiting in line at the cafeteria for lunch is actually the most annoying thing ever…so sometimes I just hit the restaurent and spend a fortune on seven dollar salads and bagels, but fucks if Imma waste my time behind all these students who think we have three hours to eat…ugh.

My boss makes perfectly timed rounds up and down my hallway 4 times a day to make sure everyone is “on task”. I die a little bit each time.

@wtfrickinfrack sounds like it would make a good tv show or character on “the office”, lol, maybe dwight.

Like @RedPowerLady my little but getting bigger annoyance is a person. Unlike @RedPowerLady I can’t laugh it off anymore. I’m about ready to snap. I tend to just avoid this person as often as possible.

@Leanne1986 That sucks! Is it a co-worker or someone you serve?

The sound of a wall clock! So annoying!

This is going to sound ridiculous, but where I ‘work’ (i.e. at home) we have this really annoying electric kettle. I practically live on tea and coffee so said kettle is an important part of my daily ‘work’ routine. The button on it won’t stay down, so I have to keep a roll of sticky tape next to it to tape it down every time I want to make a hot beverage. Sometimes the tape gets wet and doesn’t stick, so I have to stand there and hold it down myself. It is not an old kettle; it did this from the moment we bought it, but I didn’t take it back as I couldn’t find the receipt. I live in a country where I don’t speak the language so taking it back without the receipt would have been tricky. I should have just replaced it, but it felt like an extravagance to do so given that I’d just bought it. I even asked a Fluther question about this around a year ago to see if I could get it fixed, and it’s still the bane of my life.

I should probably just replace it, right?

@wtfrickinfrack You should post a picture of him on the corner of your desk and see how the supervisor reacts, lol

Our store has satellite radio and our set station is 80’s, the same rotation of songs have playing for 2 years now and it doesn’t look as though it’s going to switched out so I use the paging system to interrupt particularly annoying songs and let dead air last as long as possible before the page releases, then I repeat until the song has passed.

Buy the company.

@RedPowerLady It’s a co worker. It all depends on my own mood as to how I handle that person. Sometimes I can laugh it off and sometimes (like yesterday when I originally responded to this question) I want to explode with frustration.

@Leanne1986 Wow that sounds horrible! I bet you have some good stories from it though :)

OpryLeigh's avatar

@RedPowerLady I have plenty of “how-the-hell-did-she-get-away-with-that?” stories!!!

@Leanne1986 I can only imagine!

I’m so lucky with this job. No annoyances. The only time I get annoyed is when I’m going thru the drive though at Micky D’s in the morning and the clerks are really s..l…o…w. Surely someone has explained to them that between 7:30 and 8 a.m., the folks that are coming through are on a mission an on a time clock?

My frustration is a co-worker. I avoid her like the plague. I don’t deal with it. I just let it eat away at me.

One of my co-workers is a terrible nag. It is not enough to concede a point, he will hound you about it until something else comes up.
