What is the best cologne for a guy?

Asked by loverainx33 (67points) April 22nd, 2010

My friend just turned 17, and I want to get him a bottle of cologne? My budget is about $20 but it’s okay if it’s a little over. Anyone know of a good one?

Without resorting to buying sampler packs of designer scents . . . Aspen,

Try the clearance at Marshalls for TJ Maxx. Look for something with colorful packaging, and it will almost always be youthful and inexpensive, bue look somewhat costly.

EDIT: Or, Adidas. I knew someone who wore that.

I think cologne is an extremely personal matter, and a kind of signature. I pay well over $150 for the cologne that I use (quite sparingly, a bottle lasts me years) and it is not found on too many other men. It represents me. It is quite unlike body sprays and other commercial stuff.

@dpworkin I do agree with you. I spend money on my perfume and not many people have smelled it before… But YEARS? Sheesh… Do you wear everyday?

No. I don’t bother to wear it to school, but I wear it when I am to see friends and family. It’s part of the way they experience me. Odors and memories are highly associated, and I don’t think of cologne or perfume as being a trivial matter.

I think it is hard buy cologne for another person. Something on one person may be great and on another terrible. In the price range you speak of it is even harder. I tend to be a natural oils sort of person anyway.

All this being said, I was surprised to find this quite nice: Southern Blend but this probably has more to do with the person than anything.

@dpworkin Makes a little more sense now- I’m a daily wearer, and frankly you gave me an abbreviated complex (Fortunately not requiring years of therapy to overcome) that perhaps I smelled like a church lady.

I totally agree with you, that it should bottle up your personality. Sometimes, the cologne/perfume just doesn’t match the person. But when you’re a kid? I wouldn’t be too worried this guy’s gonna be a connoiseur. :)

I’ve really come to like bay rum, and I’m not much of a cologne guy. It has a respectable history and smells good ‘n’ manly. You can get it for cheap from many sources. See here.

Casual for men by Paul Sebastian. the cleanest smell on earth for a man to wear after shaving.

Is Drakkar Noir still available? I remember liking that scent on more than one guy at uni. It’s musky, but not as assaultive on my nose as, say, Axe.

I hate that Axe stuff . All the dudes at the private dorm near me and one of my roommates wears that mess. Saturday nights riding on the elevator to my local train is a minute-long attack on my dainty little nose!

None, ikk, it’s 2010 gentlemen.
I know there’s a lot of eager chicks in AXE commercials but believe me, that shit’s a punchline. Grow up.
Toss out that old spice and just use something naturally sourced and pleasant smelling on your face or hair, your sex life will thank you for it:
