What things are fundamentally American to you?

Asked by SuspiciousPackage (11points) May 7th, 2010

Obama has promised (and seems to be making good on said promise) to change America on a fundamental level.

To me the fundamentals include: freedom of the press, liberty, free markets, capitalism, representative government, low taxes, freedom of choice, America’s constitution, the rule of law, strong defence, small government, personal responsibility, individual sovereignty to name some.

I’m afraid that interfering in the internal affairs of other countries even without a valid pretext is more essentially American than the the many great ideas contained in the Constitution and the Bill or Rights. The truths that are held to be self-evident have been too often honoured in the their breach than in their implementation. For example, the notion of all “men” being created equal applied only to men and only to white Protestant men for most of the history of the USA.

What other superpower invaded the island nation of Grenada?

What country attacks a country and occupies another country because citizens of some third country attacked the USA?

What country came to defend the democracy of Kuwait when it had not been and still is not a democracy?

What country persecutes its own citizens and forces their friends and neighbours to rat them out based on paranoid anti-communist delusions and ravings of a US Senator like Joseph McCarthy?

What country captures a Canadian (Maher Arar) flying through the USA on a trip elsewhere and then secretly exports them to a third country (Syria) for the purpose of torture?

In what free and democratic country do elected officials advocate revoking the citizenship of a person based on their unproven membership or support for an organization that is assumed without evidence to be determined to harm the USA.

What free country is content to remove constitutional rights of all citizens (as did the Patriot Act) on the basis of glaring lies and false propaganda designed to deflect attention from a war started on false pretences against against the wrong country?

I would so admire a country with such high principles that actually lived by them.

I don’t see what President Obama has to do with this question. Surely he is not changing/going to change the things you just mentioned, most of which are basically fundamentals found everywhere in the Western world. When I read your question on what things are fundamentally American I was thinking more along the lines of burgers, blue jeans, popcorn, drive-through etc…. you know, cultural things.
