What is a normal amount of hair to lose per day?

Asked by le_inferno (6194points) May 18th, 2010

Hair falls out every day, especially when you wash, condition, and brush it. But what’s normal and what indicates actual thinning? I noticed that if I go a few days without washing my hair or combing it thoroughly, way more comes off in the shower. Today (Tuesday) I washed my hair for the first time since Thursday, because it was curled. It also hadn’t been combed much because I just pinned it up at night to maintain the curls. It resulted in about a palm-sized hair-ball! It was pretty frightening. I don’t wash my hair daily, and I usually find a significant amount of hair in the shower (though today was probably the most). It may also help to know my hair is naturally very curly in texture and grows quite slowly. Normal loss or not?

If you’ll pardon the use of another Q/A site, this seems to be a really nicely comprehensive answer.

Thanks @syz, that’s very informative. I’m a redhead, so it’s interesting to see that we have a lower number of hair follicles. Never knew there was a correlation between color and number of follicles!

This happens to me too. I wash my hair about every 2 or 3 days and have handfuls of hair when I’m done. I actually had to buy a thing to put over the drain of the tub because my hair clogs up the drain! I wouldn’t worry about it too much unless you see your hair noticeably thinning out. You said you have curly hair; is it thick too? Mine is very, very thick, so I think that has more to do with it coming out in clumps. And, yeah, going a few days without washing makes it worse, though I’m not sure why.

@essieness My hair’s not very thick. I’d say it’s about medium. Not exactly fine, but not thick. It also doesn’t really grow past shoulder length; it takes quite a while to do that and the ends start to become very damaged. (After reading @syz‘s link, apparently this is because I have a short anagen cycle.)

I’ve heard about 100 strands per day. With curly hair, i would presume that even when it falls out, it just may stay in your hair more than straight hair because it gets tangled in the curls. I have a lot of hair that comes out in the shower and I constantly have to clear the drain

It’s totally normal hun. You’ll hate the fact that girls loose more hair then men in the shower. No need to worry,

I have tons of hair that falls out each day, brush, whoops there’s some
shampooing, opps, lots more
shaking my head…yep you guessed it more
Good news is that there always seems to be more on my head than on the floor.
I have heard that you can lose over 200 strands a day.

Wait whaaa? Why was that modded?

le_inferno's avatar

@SeventhSense I guess cause you didn’t answer the question…

I thought I did. Are we looking for a strict follicle count?

le_inferno's avatar

I don’t really remember what you said exactly, but I remember you saying that your hair doesn’t fall out/baldness doesn’t run in your family… which didn’t directly answer the question, would’ve been acceptable in social thread, but general is moderated more heavily.

Yes they’re getting stricter. Forces me to to get more creative.
