Why is my computer screen going blank?

Asked by vampmoore (445points) May 26th, 2010

Today, out of nowhere, the screen literally went blank. There was no warning, it just went black. I could still hear sound, just no visual. I tried restarting the computer but it just keeps happening over and over again. Does anyone know why this is happening? And how can I fix it?

Things that come to mind immediately…..

1) Video driver is kaput
2) Video card is wonky
3) Video card unseated
4) Loose monitor cable; wiggle it around

Seriously, what kind of computer…what kind of OS?

You could try pressing the power button on the monitor… just sayin… If its a crappy monitor like my old one, it my randomly turn itself off if you bump it. Or breath on it. Or think about it.

@jerv Your thoughts are good, but how could a driver go kaput. Do you mean that it became corrupt?

You might have a hardware problem.
maybe it has nothing on it’s mind?

@AustieZ as soon as I move it it goes blank, but why is that happening?

@vampmoore There may be many reasons. Faulty wiring, a short, you broke the button and now its overly sensitive, the monitor has achieved sentience and just wants to piss you off… The list could go on. If you are technologically inclined, crack it open and have a look. otherwise… hope you have a warranty or that someone else can help you… …sorry i couldnt be more helpful…

To paraphrase one of jerv’s suggestions: is the monitor cable securely plugged in at both ends?

@AustieZ My first thought was the video card, but since you mention is happens when you move the monitor I’m inclined to think your power cord or vga/dvi (blue/grey) cable is faulty. See if you can borrow a friend’s cable to see if that fixes the problem before you buy a new one.

Is the monitor a CRT or a flat screen?

Mine did this before the Trojan took over…......viruses. i hope you have an anti-viruses program on your computer. if so, run a scan and see if the Trojan can be detected and eliminated. before the Trojan completely took over and shutdown my old computer, there were signs that this action was about to be taken by the Trojan(virus). one was just what you have described. run a virus scan and see what developes.

@MissA I’ve seen weirder things than corrupted files, especially with older drives and/or Windows.
