Musical recommendations (see details)

Asked by MissAnthrope (21511points) May 30th, 2010

Okay, so I am in charge of making playlists for the two boat tours we do. The lunch tour, I’m pretty satisfied with, as I’ve got a great mixture of songs and there’s something for everyone.

The sunset cruise is another story. I want a mellow playlist, so I’ve been editing the lunch one and taking out the pumping beats and such. The problem is that what’s left is mostly Latin music. Nothing wrong with Latin music, just that I think too much can get old, unless you’re way into it (like my mom and step-dad).

I’m looking for some recommendations, if you guys could help! What I have in mind is this.. fairly mellow (but a variety of tempo is nice to mix it up a little), a nice variety of artists and even genres, and avoiding too much more Latin. I’m very open otherwise. What would you like to listen to while on a boat eating tapas, drinking prosecco, and watching the sun go down?

Some slow classical music, like moonlight sonata.

For example:
Going To A Town – Rufus Wainwright
As – Stevie Wonder
Smooth – Santana

@ragingloli – Great idea on the classical.. I’ll go through the library and see what I have. I just added a guitar version of the Moonlight Sonata.

@rebbel – I wish I could give you more lurve.. you totally have it! That’s exactly the kind of sound I’m looking for. Thanks!!

Hall and Oates CD has many great songs for this occasion.

Throw in a country song or two and a couple of slow R&B songs.

I would leave out heavy metal and rap, altogether. would give the customers indigestion.

And, a couple of elevator music songs could not hurt. Percy Faith Orchestra is an excellent source.

Good luck.

I find White Winter Hymnal by the Fleet Foxes quite soothing and relaxing. And catchy and good.

@john65pennington – Thanks!

@earthduzt – Much lurve to you for such a detailed answer (with links, even!)! Not only that, but you’ve introduced me to some new artists and I like what I’ve heard so much! ♥♥♥

@deni – Lurve to you to introducing me to a new artist, as well! That song is way cool.

Yay, you guys rock!

I like the Icelandic band, sigurros. You may not know the name, but you would have heard the music in loads of TV shows and movies.

oh! Volare by Dean Martin. It’s actually originally called Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu by Domenico Modugno. But if you wanted to download it or whatever, the Dean Martin version is probably easier to find? Plus his is in some English and I think the other is in Italian? I can’t think right now. Either way I LOVE THAT SONG.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@cazzie – I have heard of them, but I don’t think I was too aware of their music until now. I checked your link out and I like it! Lurve to you for new artist introduction. :)

@deni – My mom is a giant Dean Martin fan and you’re right, that song is great. I saw some other Dean Martin in the playlist, I’ll have to double-check to make sure ‘Volare’ is on there. If not, what a glaring omission!

José González has some really great acoustic music.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@LeotCol – OoooOooo.. thank you! So, I looked him up on YouTube and the first song I clicked on is a song that I LOVE, only I didn’t know the name or who it was by. It was featured in a Sonia Bravia commercial that I fell in love with. Hearing the song again gave me goosebumps (the commercial was beautiful). Definitely going to add this and thanks again!!

Dave matthews band usually goes down pretty well in that kind of situation
Bonnie Raitt (basically anything from the Road Tested album or Nick of Time)
Van Morrisson (anything from the moondance album)

something a bit different: Fat Freddy’s Drop – these guys are sort of dub but really chilled and easy to listen to definately worth a listen to.

have a listen on spotify or youtube but you probably will not find the van morrison moondance album: into the mystic is my faveourite song and it is not on youtube.

maybe have a search also for the Subdudes, satisfied is a pretty good song although might be a bit up tempo.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@bongo – Good call on the DMB, I added some of that. Van Morrisson, a given. ;) Thanks for the last two suggestions, both are new to me, but I like them! Lurve!

You might try a couple of things off At Ease with Coleman Hawkins.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@lillycoyote – Perfect! Thanks!

lillycoyote's avatar

Glad I could help. You might also try a couple of things off The Claude Bolling Suites for Flute & Jazz Piano Trio

MissAnthrope's avatar

@lillycoyote – Another good one. I actually have that at home and like it a lot. This process would be a hell of a lot easier had I been able to bring my laptop with me. :) But that is a great suggestion and I will add it to my list.

You guys have been a tremendous help. Thanks so much!

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities – Sorry for the lag in reply, it gets kinda hectic here during the day. Thanks so much, I like all of those recommendations and I especially enjoyed the video to go with “Charlie Darwin”.

@jazmina88 – Thank you, too! Miles Davis, definitely! Will add that. Chick Corea and Bela Fleck are great.. those are artists I have at home that didn’t occur to me to add here.

Adam rafferty’s album Gratitude is acoustic guitar versions of some cool songs. Sir Duke, Aint no sunshine, Norweign Wood are some good ones.
Most Jimmy Buffet songs might be nice in the mix and Kelly Mcguire’s Redfish Island album might have some songs that might work.
