How do I register a .or.jp domain name?

Asked by ninechars (57points) June 14th, 2010

I need to register one for a group I work for that has a staff member in Japan (and probably meets any institutional requirement for the domain name). But simple googling has not revealed where to register a .or.jp name or even test for availability. Does anyone know?

Try here or here [second one says it is discount]

Those sites seem to offer only .co.jp or .jp, not .or.jp.

What is or.jp other than a not-top level domain? Is it an official domain?

I think I found it—Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd

First I found this whois for an or.jp then I looked up the registrar—JPRS but they are slow loading up

I eventually found this:

http://jpdirect.jp/new/or/

Notably not in English, but can read enough to tell that there’s an application process (presumably to verify that you’re a qualified org). Will have to punt this to Japanese staffer.

@ninechars the one I found you can read in english if you type
Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd. into google

it also says that .OR.JP [is for] Judicial persons (other than kaisha) established under the laws of Japan. [not organizations]
(e.g. EXAMPLE.OR.JP)

also

CO.JP Companies (kaisha) having an official corporate registration in Japan. Non-Japanese companies that are registered as “Gaikoku Kaisha” may also apply.
(e.g. EXAMPLE.CO.JP)

GR.JP Groups which consist of two or more individuals residing in Japan, or groups of two or more corporations [*2] established under the laws of Japan.
(e.g. EXAMPLE.GR.JP)

.JP Any individual, group, or organization that has a permanent postal address in Japan may apply for a 2nd level, i.e., General-use JP Domain Name.
(e.g. EXAMPLE.JP)

these 3 seemed to be the closest unless you want a regional subdomain.

.jp has no equivalent of .org , it has .ed for .edu and another one for edu, it has .ne for .net and I think it has .go for its national govt —- but nothing for org
