Can you seriously damage a car door if you slam it really hard? How likely is this?

Asked by Fernspider (3597points) June 22nd, 2010

This morning I was fuming about issues around my car parking building. When I was finally given access to the part of the car parking building for monthly pass holders (locked until 9 am for some reason), I was late for work.

In my anger, I ended up really slamming my car door quite hard. In hindsight I regret this immensly as it is my new car which I spent alot of money on.

What kind of damage can be caused if someone slams a door hard (Suzuki Swift) and is it common to be damaged after such an event.

In the meantime, I think I will walk back to the parking building and check on it. My partner tells me the internal window mechanics may be screwed now.

Being that it’s fairly new, everything should be okay, just please don’t make a habit of it ;) Test the window to see how it works and compare it to the non-slammed passenger door window.

On a side note the Suzuki Swift is a great little car, last year I had a Chevy Aveo5 which is the same car branded different with some minor tweaks to vanity design. This little car saved my life. I flipped it doing about 70kmph down a gravel road.. Flipped as in ass over end. I hit soft gravel over corrected lost control went into a skid hit the ditch; the front of my car dug into the soft mud at the bottom of the steep ditch, planted and my car flipped, I was in the air for about 20ft, went through a barb wire fence taking out 5 fence posts and the car came to rest on the roof. (luckily it was not a full flip or more than one :S) The car, who i affectionately called Mitzy, was totaled and written off. (I was heart-broken, I loved that car!!) Me, I walked away, not a scratch. First thing the police on scene said to me was “You’re lucky you we’re not impaled by a fence post!”

One word of caution though, through the accident the spare tire jack and instruments in the tire compartment for changing the tire came dislodged and were flung about the car with me. For that I have a phobia of hatch-backs now :( Check your spare tire and tools for that job and make sure it is all fastened down securely in the compartment in the bottom of your trunk.

Sorry I went off on such a tangent there, I just had to share what I think about those great little cars!!! <3 I hope you enjoy your to no end :)

Oh wow @HeatherGrace, that is one full on experience!! I will check the back like you say… certainly hadn’t considered that before.

I do love my little car – I call it my Swifty and my friends call it the Tardis (something to do with looking small but having endless space inside – Time Dimension in Space or something- I have no idea really). I feel super guilty for taking my frustration out on the car :(

I have been back to check and confirm that the windows are still going up and down and the side mirrors still electrically move. So I think so permanent damage was done. Lesson learnt though, I am only hurting myself with that kind of childish behaviour.

@Rachienz TARDIS

Time
And
Relative
Dimentions
In
Space

The Tardis is from doctor who, and it is bigger on the inside than the outside.

i had heard that you could loosen the nuts and bolts that hold things together, for example the speakers which are in the doors.

I’d worry about doing that with some antique sports car or the like, but most automobiles built in the last 70 years (with steel body frames) can take it.
