Try to find anything by Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchener, Lord Invader or other Trindadian artists (most popular calypso such as Harry Belafonte is the watered down version). True Calypso is topical and very funny; Lord invader co-wrote ‘Rum & Coca Cola’ a huge hit for the Andrews Sisters but the subject was prostitution. Mighty Sparrow wrote songs about everything from Sputnik (..the poor little doggie in the Russian satellite..) to Idi Amin.

Contrast the Harry Belafonte vinyl LP (which came out in 1956 and stunned the US) w. the authentic artists that tupara lists. Biggie was Day-O aka The Banana Boat Song.
