How do I look up a question that has already been asked/answered in the general section, so I don't waste my time asking the same thing as someone else?

Asked by amandagetrich (46points) July 9th, 2010

I wanted to ask a question about tumblr, but I would rather look and see if there are already question’s people have asked under either the general, or social section.
When I tried to type tumblr in the search bar at the top of the homepage, only google results came up.
So, is there a search button, or bar locating somewhere within the General Section and I’m just missing it?
Or is there no way to look up already asked questions?

Fluther’s search feature is powered by Google.
So the results will look like a google search. But they are links to Fluther questions.

The search bar in the top right corner of the screen is for seaching for questions on Fluther. I believe it is just “powered” by Google, but it actually does a search of the site. When I search for “tumblr” it brings me to a list of questions here on fluther about tumblr.

Oh, I feel kind of rediculous now. I guess I just assumed because it said powered by Google, that it was only going to bring up google results for Tumblr. I should have probably tried it before posting this, but you can’t blame me… it’s my first day on here. Thanks guys!

@amandagetrich Welcome to Fluther. You can find a lot of tips and ideas by browsing the links at the bottom of the page, as well.

The search here even when powered by Google is pretty worthless. Granted, it is a lot better than it was but it still sucks.

I would just ask your your question and not worry about it. And I answer a lot of Tumblr questions. If you send me a pm with your current site and info about what you want to do I can probably help you.

@John

I have noticed this as well and I’m curious as to why the Fluther search is this way when regular Google obviously isn’t.

Is it due to people not putting in proper tags or what ?

I have tried numerous times to search for a previous question in which I have participated so I know some of the keywords and I come up blank. Very frustrating.

So, why is the Fluther search so worthless?

And what can me done about it? If anything…...

@Buttonstc :: Same problem here. I usually hit up the proper google site and just add site:fluther.com to the query and get better results.

So you mean that you go to the regular Google site ?

I’m not sure what you meant by proper so that’s what I’m assuming.

And then just put in the pertinent words separated by commas and followed by the text you indicated?

Just wanted to check that I’ve understood properly. For some reason I’ve got a bit of brain fuzz tonight :)

Just bear with me, please :D
