In the temperate region or further north in the Northern Hemisphere, the house should be oriented with most of the windows to the south for optimum solar gain in winter. For the Southern Hemisphere, do the opposite. Our earth-sheltered house has an overhang to block direct summer sunlight from the windows, but winter sun can shine directly in.
