Have you ever almost died?

Asked by mowens (8403points) July 30th, 2010

Have you ever done anything that almost got you killed? Was it on purpose?

I’ve done it countless times… never on purpose, I just enjoy danger.

Yeah quite a few times, through recklessness, stupidness, and accidents. I used to enjoy the danger (surfing buses, climbing buildings, playing chicken) but these days the closest I come is eating too fast

Yeah earlier this summer I was walking down the hallway and there was my MIL half naked changing in my bedroom! Almost had a grabber right then and there! HS I thought that was it!

Many times, most of them when I was in Vietnam.

I’ve almost died a few times…as a sickly child in the hospital, and later as a stupid child wandering out into traffic.

I almost died while racing on country roads, multiple times with explosives, really all stupidity related. I used to be insane. I am still insane, just slightly more sane.

The only time I ever came close to actually dying was when I had a brutal case of pneumonia.

I have had some close calls with vehicles and people.

Once, when I was a kid… I choked on a piece of hamburger bun… I was a preschooler sitting at the kitchen table with my mom having lunch, I remember laughing and then panicking… couldn’t breathe… my mom picked me up and carried me over to the neighbors…one of which was trying to give me a glass of water…I actually remember ‘browning out’, the next thing I remember was gasping for air

My friends older brother, Whit was home (Thankfully) he did the Heimlich maneuver and then mouth to mouth

Only twice. First time was on a theme park ride called the free fall. The ride is a massive ‘L’ shape. You go up, then drop down & end up laying on your back at the bottom. My cart got stuck at the bottom after the free fall. The entire ride had broken down. I was laying on my back at the bottom & I could see up to the top of the ride where another cart was ready to free fall…which, if it had – would have crushed the shit out of me. The other time was in college, after a crazy night. I woke up in the hospital with no recollection of the last 24 hours.

I have almost died a couple times, actually. It was when I was very little, but I was born with several medical problems that almost killed me. It’s led to my parents being very protective of me, which I don’t mind most of the time.

Yes but not on purpose.

I don’t know how close to death’s doorstep I actually was, but in my early 20s I was recuperating from fairly minor surgery, developed a blood clot on my lung, and then pleurisy. I woke up in an oxygen tent in IC looking up at my Rabbi. It was one of the scariest experiences of my young life.

Several times in my former military career. Most recently, I dodged a baseball bat intended for my skull broke my wrist taking it away from him.

Going to the golf course with something on my mind, the flashing lights were going off, and went right through a railroad crossing, and when i looked to my left, could read the letters on the front of the train. STOPPED….sweats was pouring off of me. Saw my life flash in front of me!

Yes, several times.

Yes, in my late teens when my appendix perforated on the way to the emergency room. I sure felt like death would be a blessing for a time.

Yes. And I also had the opportunity to perform the Heimlich technique on two different people and save their lives. i guess I’ve paid back society.

Only through illness. At one point I was 48 hours from death, so I’ve been told.

Yes, I had a burst appendix, and the doctor botched the operation. The hospital had to go in a second time and drain out the poison.

Other than that, I once tried to kill myself by spraying roach poison in a closet and then sitting on the floor, hoping to make my family sorry for not noticing how upset I was. Nothing happened, and after a half hour, I got bored and took a shower.

Jabe73's avatar

Almost electrocuted twice (I still have scars on my back/arms from those), fell off of a ladder and 2 bad car wrecks I crawled out of.

ETpro's avatar

@YARNLADY And I thought I had it bad. At least my doctor did the operation flawlessly, and after that, the only pain ran from when the demerol wore off till the nurse could arrive to my frantic pressing of the cal button.

daytonamisticrip's avatar

Jabe73 thanks for reminding me. my mom told me how when she was 7 and a half months pregnant with me she got electrocuted.

ETpro's avatar

@daytonamisticrip Unless she told you as an unbodied spirit, she must have gotten an electric shock, perhaps a severe one. But electrocution means death caused by electric shock.

daytonamisticrip's avatar

ahh whatever, i don’t know the correct terms. so what you know what i meant.

ETpro's avatar

@daytonamisticrip Yeah, and I’m glad she survived or we likely wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Makstatic's avatar

Multiple times. You gotta live like your not afraid to die.

When I was 2 the family went on a gold mining trip ( Australia) and I decided to crall over to a waterfall and started drifting down head towards the fall, Luckily a family friend noticed me and grabbed me literally 2 seconds before my fall to death.
