Are the oil spill gasses causing Floridians and south Texans to become sick?

Asked by Aster (20023points) August 3rd, 2010

A friend told me that the oil spill disaster is causing people in Florida and states on the gulf of mexico to develop breathing problems and headaches and that you need to live at least 200 miles north of the spill. Do you have symptoms or have you read this?

Well they ain’t gonna tell you that you shouldn’t be breathing the fumes…they have waivers from the EPA to use as much as needed to get the job done. Even Exxon doesn’t care to test their Correx product to find out…
No toxicity studies have been conducted on this product.

So Cruiser is expert at this and did some digging. A main ingredient is a HYDROTREATED LIGHT PETROLEUM DISTILLATE used as a solvent and “dispersant” and this is what 2 manufacturers have to say about that chemical…

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The vapour is slightly irritating to the eyes . The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system . Exposure to high concentration of vapours may result in unconsciousness. Swallowing the liquid may cause aspiration into the lungs with the risk of chemical pneumonitis.

and

Health Hazards Acute and Chronic:EYE/SKIN:MILD IRRITATION. INHAL:MAY
CAUSE HEADACHES AND DIZZINESS.

The fact that Exxon has not tested this product tells me they know testing will be a Pandoras box of health issues and since a zillion gallons have been sprayed and spread in the gulf AND this is a hydrocarbon which means it is a VOC and WILL escape into the air as it is sprayed AND people can and may get sick from this vapor cloud coming ashore.

I never get headaches but 2 nights ago I sure had one. I’m NE of Dallas by 100 miles.
How far north of the gulf is dallas? Daughter is in dallas and her eyes burn and she has headaches lately.

I had headaches, even vomited from the nausea, when all this first started and I live in New Orleans. I could smell the oil- I don’t smell it so much now….I think it was mainly from when they were burning the oil-or maybe from the dispersants.

@Aster I doubt that Dallas is affected b/c it’s in North Texas, but whoknows.

Well? I feel like crap… flu like cold symptoms that come and go as well as several of my friends, one of which is a teacher and her students are having issues too. This is as far South as Fort Myers, FL….
